AK or AR

I'm having a tough time deciding weather to get an
AR-15 or an AK-47. I've seen AK's in 5.56 which is the caliber I'm leaning towards. Brass is easy to find and fairly inexpensive to reload and also I'm going to get a .223 varmit rifle. Any thoughts.

AR-15 will be more accurate, lighter, and more comfortable. AK-74 will be cheaper and more reliable. I myself am not sure...the AR-15 does shoot really good. If it's something that could be exposed to somewhat harsh conditions, get the AK-74 as it will hold up better. If you will be able to keep it pretty clean, get the AR-15.

listen, personally. both rifle has pros and cons . ive seen just about every test you can on a ak. it still shoots. ive seen just about every test with a ar.it fails sometimes. but the quantities of ammo these tests were spitting out were well beyond my expectations. for both rifles. my solution

im getting both as well.
i have my ar family. i just know im gonna get a ak47.

I agree. Apples and oranges. But if I had the money I would get both. If I had the money for either and not both then I would get the AR.

All depends on what you want the rifle for. SHTF? Most LEO's and our military use AR's, so mags and ammo should be easy to fine, especially in peoples homes(at least ammo). With that said, I'd buy an upper with a 1x7 twist rate. Will allow you to use most any ammo you find. The more common 1x9 twist barrels may have problems stabilizing ammo over 62gr's. As of right now, 7.62x39 is MUCH cheaper then 5.56/.223. If your reloading though, I don't know. Never looked into the price difference. AR will give you a much larger range of uses, as about any upper will work with any lower. Can switch from a 600 yard set up to a CQC set up in a minutes. AK? I wouldn't want to go past 200 yards or so without it being something like an Arsenal or a higher quality AK, and some decent optics. Of course you can always drop an AK in the mud for a month, pick it up and fire it, so.... Just depends.

Apples and Oranges is right... depends on the use and conditions during use. The AK is much more reliable dirty than an AR.

Pred is right here... the AR gives you much more choices than the AK.

How will you use it... that question will give you your answer. Although ... meatloaf his the best answer here.

Yeah, I've got one AK(need another) and working on building my 2nd and 3rd AR. I'm getting pretty slick at putting them together. The second of the two I put together last night(didn't put the stocks on, don't have those yet) only took me like 15 minutes LOL.

Pred ... are you using reference material or just by memory? If you need, I could probably get you an armorers book on the AR... ?

The first one I did with a little help from an online guide, however on the second one I didn't need any help. It's been a while since I installed a LPK in an AR(about 2 years).

Well, I haven't fired or held either rifle, but I'd say get both.

I've done a lot of research on both, and the AK is WAY more reliable, but from what the other guys on here say, the AR is more accurate.

But a gun is only as accurate as the shooter. (To a point)

So do whatever you'd like.

Like the others said, I'd say get both, and if at all possible, try to get them in the same caliber. (Is that possible? o.O Just wondering!!)

Could save you so money or something. Instead of having to buy two different boxes of ammo, just buy one big one.

3 problems....1. mags 2. ammo 3. guns.

1. You have to stock pile mags because as soon as the next election is over, 10 round mags will be the limit again.

2. We ban ammo from China NOW....so how soon will it be before we ban Wolf and other Russian ammo??? And it is getting more expensive to buy as we sit here...even if it isn't banned or taxed.

3. Can an assault weapons ban be too far into the future??

So, if money is tight.......go for a non WASR AK and buy mags and ammo every month. You got more funds...get an AR and plenty of mags. Forget the varmit rifle for now....those wont be banned any time soon. Invest now in something you want...but likely WONT be able to get a year fom now.

You have about 12 months to get whichever assault rifle you want...fully out fitted...to last the rest of your life. Get the mags first.
