Is it normal for my barrel to get so hot?

I just got my first AK47. I'm just wondering if it's normal for the barrel to get so hot so fast?

YES. Especially if you shot many hundreds of rounds without letting her rest. I mean think about it, is gun powder exploding in the chamber and pushing a slightly larger then the barrel is object through the barrel. Yes, it will get hot...

Take a look at some of the vids on youtube, there's at least one on there where the guy actually sets his handguard on fire. I, personally, think he's an idiot for abusing a gun that way just for a few minutes of fame-I respect my guns more than that

is that the guy who tried burning through 500 rds? I believe the gun got so hot the rounds started baking off before he pulled the trigger.

+1 toolman. I have watched similar vids on youtube. I completely agree. My AK gets pretty warm too pretty quick. A 30 rd mag gets it nice and hot. I had it out a few weeks ago, and it was getting hot enough in the warm weather that I could feel the heat when my hand was close to the barrel. Probly put about 60 or so rounds through it in pretty quick succession. So I told my buddy we would shoot my pistol until they got nice and hot and let the AK cool down. I put 150 rds through my Kimber pretty quick, and shot my Enfield some too.

It's not excusively AKs that get hot after rapid fire. All guns get hot. It's the universal law of Combustion andFriction. Some AKs may heat up faster than others but those that do will conversly cool off faster too.

Dealers Samples are next to worthless. They can only be transfered from class3 to class3 or to law enforcement with request demo letter.

Dealer Samples can not be transfered to the general public and are therefore worth less than the SA you are accustom to paying for.

The reasoning is debatable as to why he destroyed his FA this way, fame? I doubt it, but did you learn anything?

It seems as though there are a lot of young guys here or at the very least inexperienced. Ammo not that long ago was $89 per case and AKs well let's say cheap, you could get a MAK90 new for $169. Point is these were cheap shooters, respect? Disposable.

Very hot. In fact, if you shoot through 30rds or more, don't touch the barrel. It will burn you. I did that once with my SKS. Got me right on the inside of my arm above the elbow when I bent over with it slung over my shoulder. That thing hurt for a week.

That's one of the reasons caseless ammo never caught on. The case leaving the chamber takes a lot of the heat with it. Caseless stuff gets a lot hotter.
Remember that most of the early machine guns were water cooled.
Many modern MGs have easily replaced barrels.
If you have a G-3 and someone trys to sell you the Tropical Handguard, run the other direction as fast as you can.

YES! After you shoot it don't be a dummy and grab it by the barrel. I saw my dad do it twice and two separate occasions. Some full auto models will catch on fire after a certain amount of non stop shooting.

If you see some old Viet Nam pics, a lot of the VC have a heavy rubber glove on their left hand.

In case your assault rifle ever starts cooking off rounds, piss down the barrel (through the chamber).
It'll stink but get you back in action.

I've heard of M-1 Garand Thumb, but AK-tallywacker sounds a lot worse.

Pissing on a cold rifle? Thats about as useful as facial hair and wisdom teeth. What happens when the urin freezes on an already frozen gun.
Chip away.
