| Member | Could yall please educate me? Hows it goin? OK. I want a high power semi auto rifle that is somewhat accurate. I was thinking about the AK47. I am not really up on them, but I know that there are lots of different models available. I want to know what to look for when I go to buy one, just so that I don't end up with a Chinese one or something. Until I read the sticky, I never knew that they came chambered in anything other that 7.62x39, but I figure that is the only thing I will be able to find. I live in Indiana and my local Dunham's Sporting Goods has them for $350 or $400, can't quite remember. What is the going rate for one in average condition? I'll probably end up getting one at the gun show, so mabey the pricing will be a little more cost-friendly there. Please let me know what to look for. I don't want anything that is rare and sought after, just a lower-cost rifle that will be reliable and fun to shoot. Thanks. |

| Senior Member | What do you want it for? Hunting? Target? personal or home defense? SHTF? What is the main reason you're wanting one. Decide that and it will reduce how many you'll have to choose from. If you want something fun and cheap to shoot, then get a .22. Low cost for both the rifle and the ammo. Good for target and some smaller varmints, rabbit, etc.etc.etc. The AK your Dunham's has is more than likely a WASR10 for that price. If that's what you go with, look for canted front sight or gas tube. Educate yourself here about that stuff. Romanian Kalashnikov Rifles Another good one that's reasonably priced, ammo is readily available, same ammo as the AK as a matter of fact and you can still find un-issued ones, and a BLAST to shoot, is the Yugo model 59/66 SKS in 7.62X39. | Senior Member | If you're after something in 7.62x39 that can shoot straight, either get a Saiga or an SKS, not an AK. The Saigas are built for the civilian market and while they have an operating system in common with the AK, are built better and shoot straighter. In my opinion, you'd do better to buy an SKS rated NRA Excellent, clean the cosmoline off it (there is a sticky in the Mosin forum to tell you how), and learn to shoot it. The SKS is dead simple to maintain, shoots the same ammo as the AK, and is a true rifle, not an assault rifle. At the moment Yugoslavian M59/66 SKS rifles with the built-in grenade launcher are going for around $200, give or take $50. If you want to make it look less menacing, undo one screw, remove the bayonet and replace it with a purpose-made bipod. There are also lots of aftermarket accessories including scope mounts, scopes, and sporter stocks available. http://www.classicarms.us/index.html http://www.netstores.com/dwos-bin/proc_srch.pl http://www.jgsales.com/advanced_sear...sort/3a/page/2 http://www.militarygunsupply.com/sho...roducts_id=208 Last edited by Cyrano; 07-03-2008 at 10:49 PM. | Senior Member | How about an SKS Yugo?; they are usually 150$ at the gun shows and are better made than the AK rifles and I believe them to be more accurate. They also shoot 7.62 x 39.

| Banned | You guys have got to stop feeding on each others ignorance. SAIGAs ARE AKs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And where's this idea that Chinese make junk anyway? I have several and all are of good quality. Stay away from the MISRs as they are a combination of Chinese parts kits built on Maadi receivers, mostly the concern of mine is the sleeved barrels. Chinese are 19mm and Maadi trunnions are 23mm. Not to mention they are not complete factory guns. Link- http://home.comcast.net/~jfreeman16/page_4.htm Here's my milled MAK90, I make my own stocks, teak. | Senior Member | I know, when I found the Romanian SKS, they also had one of those Maadi's. It was in on consignment, but the guy wanted like $650 for it. He's since reduced it. I don't remember to what, but not worth it to me unless he brings it down to $300-350. The Gas tube and FSB were/are canted, and big time to me... SO I PASSED!

| Member | I suppose the only reason I want to stay away from the chinese model is because I think I read that the reciever is stamped sheet metal instead of machined. My dad has an SKS, the only thing about that is that it only holds 5 shots. I've seen the 30 rd mags for it, but I don't know how much I would have to do to the gun to make them work. Also, The AK is an all around cool gun. They have to be one of the most reliable combat guns around judging from how lots of the foreign forces use them. |
