| An idea
Probably has been done before, but here goes. A friend of mine will have access to a bending jig soon, and I plan to bend at least one receiver, mebbe several. That said, I want an AK pistol in 7.62x39, although I want to make it a bit different than most that I have seen. First off (assuming this is legal) I want a forward pistol grip. I live in Washington state, so no silly state regs, and I'm 99% certain that is federally legal, but not positive. Then I want a 12" barrel with muzzle break and bayonet lug. Pretty much building this for the heck of it. Thoughts? |

It is 100% ILLEGAL to have a forward Grip on a Pistol, Unless it is registered as an AOW with BATFE...When I built My AMD AK pistol, I had to weld a plate over the forward Grip slot to make it Legal. You MUST also have a rear Trunnion that Cannot take any kind of stock....Otherwise it is again considered a Short Barreled rifle and must Be registered with the Feds as an AOW. Rich

Yah know, I'm not opposed to creating a registered AOW just to get what I want. I may have to bend up a couple of receivers when I get the chance and send in the paperwork for an AOW. Now correct me if I'm wrong again please, but an AOW is a $5 tax stamp, while a destructive device is the $200 stamp? Gotta admit, a forward pistol grip AK pistol is tantalizing enough to me, where I would be willing to register it as an AOW... |

Yes, SV, AOW's are $5 while SBR's, SBS's, Sound Suppressors, and Machine Guns are all $200 tax stamps. I'd just go for the basic pistol, man. Too much hassle to go with the foregrip.

| Metal work
I fear you are oversimplifying the metal work. Others have addressed the legal point. Guns are not created just by bending the receiver. A receiver is, even in a basic design, a thing of strict dimentions and tempering. Should you wish to go forward with this project I advise you to talk it over with a good gunsmith or at least visit a metal fab shop in your area. |
