When I bring it home...

I just want to know if you guys, in your infinite gun knowledge, could please tell me what I'm going to be doing to my gun when I first get it home before going to the range? I know I need to clean it, but to what extent? Will I be doing a regular disassembly and clean? Or is there a special way to clean a brand new, just out the box, greased up AK-47? Also I wanted to know what I will be using for the initial clean? Just regular gun solvent and then a good oiling and I'm ready to go? I heard of people using carburetor cleaner? So would "Deep Creep" be a suitable product? Thank you all for your time, any tips and pointers would be very appreciated.

It really depends on the condition of the gun, but more than likely it will have a packing grease of sorts to prevent corrosion (similar to cosmoline if you've been infected with mosinitis). Also, if you get a Century build, it may have gunk/shavings in the action/receiver, as my AES-10a had.

Carburetor cleaner will get that stuff out well, but will usually leave a powdery residue unless it states "no residue" on the can. Most automotive electrical cleaners will be no-residue, but if you can find another solvent that's "no residue" that's cheaper, go for it. You can also use Mineral Spirits, which is a mix of a little less harsh solvents, including acetone, which is a little less harsh on the nose than pure acetone.

If you've done an AK field disassembly before, you should be fine, but also removing the buttstock and upper handguard to clean the receiver and the gas tube/gas block, respectively, will also be helpful in getting access to those locations.

Then, just give it a good light oiling and have fun at the range!

Yes it is a WASR-10 from Century, so i guess it will have the gunk and shavings. I do have Acetone and I think I also have some Mineral Spirits as well, either of those would be fine to use?

both would be fine. just be careful not to get it on the wood. i'd remove the wood just to avoid any accidents. then you can hose it down all you want and not worry.

p.s. the mineral spirits proably wont bother the finish. the acetone probably will. either way, i wouldn't take any chances with either. you could leave the buttstock on if it really doesn't want to come off. just make sure you hold the barrel down and the butt up while cleaning and be careful not to get anything on the wood finish.

Your talking about the finish of the wood correct, not the actual bluing of the gun?

yep. talking about the finish on the wood. unless your bluing is really just paint, you're not gonna hurt it. whatever you use, test it in a spot that doesn't show first just to be safe. no reason to take free advice from some yahoo on the net as gospel.

I must say, that what goes on between a man.. and his newly acquired firearm.. may not suitable for a public forum.

HOWEVER.. I can suggest a couple of sites that will "give you some pointers" as to how to handle your first encounter.

sry.. couldn't resist, and it looked like everybody else covered everything. lol

Don't insult it... that's for capitalist pigs with too much wealth that hasn't been redistributed!

Proper AK's "shoot" Stolichnaya or other such Russian Vodka ... of course, that's at the end of the day when the cleaning's been done and the ammo put away.

Dont use mineral spirits. It also goes by the name "paint thinner". It also leaves an oily residue. Break down and buy a can of gun scrub. Or, buy a can of Remington Shotgun cleaner, you get more bang for your buck.

Sometimes that's preferred, though. It leaves a petroleum film, as opposed to a powder film. This is something that protects the metal from corrosion... I personally like that quality.

what i do is go to walmart and get atleast 2 cans of breakfree powder blast and disasemble the gun then spray it all out clean with the powderblast then oil her up good and your set. brake cleaner has been said to do the same thing as powder blast but i never used it so i can't coment on it .but i swear by the powder blast that stuff is great.
