Which one to buy. I dont have cash to burn but i got a gut feeling there gonna become rare'er for what ever reasons.(gut feelings normally come true for me as there never good ones.) Right now im kicking around buying and converting 4 different calibers. Now its just deciding which? The .223 lets me share ammo between my ar and it. In a SHTF 7.62 will be less comon the the others, But its a true'er ak cambering then the others. 12g would be a great defense gun, would turn heads at the range. The .308 would play very nice with my rem 700, as i plan to hand load for the 700 why not the Saiga? The initial cost of the rifle doesn't bug me too much. Tho im leaning toward a cheaper initial investment. But if my LGS will let me get layaway with him holding for more then 3 months cost means nothing. The land lady would sh*t a brick and beat me with it, if i bought another one home soon. Vote for which one and why. Ill update the post with the number of votes. I have recently acquired both the Saiga 12 and the Saiga 7.62x39. If you already have a "battle rifle" I would suggest the Saiga 12. It's AWSOME fire power at close range!

Since you already have an AR15, I would suggest the Saiga 7.62x39, just to diversify your ammo usage capabilities.

Saiga 12 is awesomeness and Saiga .223 shoots very nice, low recoil and accurate. I own a 12 and .223 . If you want a .308 get a FAL, which I also own.

Wha... Wha... What??? No 5.45 on this ballot? I am demanding a recount! Clearly at 150 per 1080 rounds you can cheaply amass a small stockpile of ammo before 12/21/2012

no domestically produced ammo really. I dont buy mil surplus anyhow. Dont shoot anuff to need large amounts cheap, god forbid i get one krap round that blows up my gun.

I want a fal but its a bit pricey compared to the Saiga .308. From what ive seen 200-300 bucks at lest.

If your definition of Battle Rifle is a larger bore semi auto then i do not have a gun fitting that role.

Get Saiga 12. Can't beat the 20 rd drum for home defence.
Other then that all other calibers are your pick. I have experience with shooting all but .223 in a saiga and I see no reason to get a .223 might as well own an AR oh wait you already do. So scrap that caliber.

No, scrap the Poodle Shooter and replace it with the Saiga, if you feel you must have that varmint cartridge in your defense battery for some reason. The Saiga is a lot more reliable than the AR-15.

Given my druthers, I think I'd take the Saiga 12. I've handled them but never had a chance to shoot one. About the only thing that would top that for home defense would be the AA-12; but those aren't legal for private citizens to own without going through the horse-hockey with the BATFE to register a full-auto gun, and even then they are specifically banned in New York State.

No chance in owning the AA-12 anyway. Military and police only, the only way to own a full-auto anything is to buy one that was registered pre-1986, after that only the above can buy a new. I would buy ammo for what you have and not worry with another gun, too many to feed. $400 would buy a nice little stock of ammo.

Wont let me edit the OP to update vote totals. Keep in mind this rifle isnt going to be a safe queen or a def gun only. Its going to be a shooter first and foremost. Alil over view of what i plan to do to each cal. The .223 i wouldnt mind trying my hand at an underfolding stock, tricky but rewarding. The 7.62 will be put into black synthetic furniture and painted urban cambo or urban tiger stripe. The 12g i dont really know, its on the list cuz its bad ass but its not gonna be a cheap shooter. Slugs only at the ranges available to me. The .308 will get done up as close to a SVD as i can get it, maybe some G3Battlerifle furniture if possible. And leave my poodie gun alone lol, i love my Jenna.

idk man... i dont think a saiga could compare to a yugo m70b1, that gun is sex, and after the conv they would cost about the same

saiga 12 is the way to go, what on earth can stand up to a 12ga AK? what a beast hold up to 31rds of semi-auto 12ga slug! like a lead wall coming at you at 1600 feet per second

Well, I agree a saiga conversion will cost you as much as any decent ak variants. Howevr half the fun is converting the gun, plus you get brand spanking new rifle made at a russian factory. I have a few saigas and I would not trade them for any other AK honestly.

I too believe that Saiga's are some of the best built AK's money can buy. Everyone seems to overlook the fact that these rifles are built from new parts and assembled Once, not made from parts and put on a US receiver. The end result is the tightest tolerances you are likely to find on an AK. Plus, in respects to Yugo AK's, the lack of a chromed barrel turns a lot of people off.
