Thinking about moving to Alaska

The thought of moving to alaska has always been floating around in the back of my head since I have been a kid and now with my current skill set it might be a reality in the next three years. I have been looking at Idaho, Montana and Texas seriously but after talking to Moose on here the other day he gave me some insight on the anchorage area and I have been seriously thinking it over and doing some damage control on the wife while running it by her. Can someone who lives in or near Anchorage please lend me some advice on neighborhoods or outlying areas of the city where it would be better to look at property or housing. I dont know that much about the area and will probily make a couple trips up in the next two years while I work on setting myself up to exit the military.

I saw a show on T.V. a few months ago about Anchorage, It has a lot of nice neighborhoods, pretty homes and what not.
Where they differ from the lower 48 is, it's not uncommon for Moose and some other wildlife to roam the streets and munch on shrubs and flowers.
Plus it gets very cold there.
I suppose the climate, being day time at mid-night and the cost of liveing are the only differents then where you may live now.

One of the bonus's of moveing there is being able to meet some of the Alaskin memebers of Gun and Game. LOL

id love to go to Alaska, too cold for me , i gotta go to Arizona in the winter just to get out of the Missouri cold. LOL. as AH said it would be nice to meet some of the great people from G&G who live up there.

I was looking at a ton of moose pics from Anchorage and it seems their like rabbits up there and the wildlife looks like they have little fear of humans.

If I was as big as a moose I wouldnt fear humans either LMAO

I wouldent either. The people taking the pics were very close. Close enough to baby moose that I wouldent feel right without a rifle in my hands waiting for mama to come charging.

Sea-Chicken1, I live on the east side of Anchorage , not as new and pretty as the south side or the hill side but not bad . the only way you will know for sure if this is what you are looking for is if you come up and take a look around. I moved up here 20 years ago from Maryland and have never looked back. anchorage has grown into a nice modern town with alot to offer, the only real downside is Travel, if you like to visit family down south.

We also Hunt , Ice fish, Snowmobile, Eat lots of Ice Cream, ski, build Snowmen, etc...

used to ice fish in vermont on lake champlain, that is a lot of fun

I went to Alaska cause thats where the job was, ended up staying cause I liked the place now I have a different line of work.

The weather only bothers you if you let it, guess its what your conditioned to.
unless you live near some place big you have 7/11 and MacDonalds and Walmart
anyplace else (most the state) well things runs on a different time schedule (bush time)\

Its been 20 years and I still havent migrated south the circle yet.

My body does not like cold or I would be up there. Like Jeremiah Johnson with out the Indians. Alaska is beautiful, and I think everyone should go up and visit Moose and Steve. LOL But since everything is thawing around there like Al says, it should be a tourist hot spot in ten years. Get in on the ground floor now. Never fished out an actual hole before. What if they pull you in?

I'm used to living with crazy weather I'm grew up in western washington where it's not uncmmon in the winter to see 4 seasons in one day.

either successfully or unsuccessfully made a move to Alaska.

The big theme seems to be having a realistic grasp of the true costs of living in the area in which you wish to live coupled with having a job offer
or ability to set up your own business when you get there.

If you are going into business for yourself make certain you have more than enough capital to get started.

What is the best way to heat your house in the winter. That is what I am seeing to be the most darastic change in cost.

Sea_chicken1 I heat with gas but That question is a tough one, I quess it depends on where you live and what access you have to heating oil / gas /wood / electric. my place use to be heated with fuel oil then the city ran gas everywhere so it was switched over to gas , I use electric and wood as backups just incase. and I guess the overall cost depends on your home and how well it is insulated. not the best answer but it's what I had.
