What is a cheap long range caliber. Gunshows are coming up and need something to think about if I see it. I have a .223 and .308 right now....is the .223 it or is there cheaper? My range only has 200 yds but I can find areas to shoot further. I'm just bored and need something to think about.

The 223 and the 308 both have a definite long range pedigree with some good factory match ammo available and a multitude of high quality match bullets for the handloader.

That is what I figured. I'm just getting bored sitting here every day.

The .223 is about as perfect as I can ask for at 200 yards. Inexpensive and easy to reload.
Basically, I shoot .223 at 100 to 200 yards. I shoot .308 at 200-500 yards. On rare occasions I get to shoot the .308 out to 1000 yards.
Boredom can become an expensive animal to tame! LOL

I was thinking of that. Been wanting to do a mosin project. I'll have to see what I have for cash.
You'll need ~ $100 for a 91/30 MN and $180 for 880 [yes -- eight hundred eighty] rounds. Go to town with it at big targets at 300 yards plus. So what if it is 3-4 MOA to start with? Practice on the CHEAP and when you get consistantly on target with that rifle, you can graduate to something more expensive. I love challenging myself with iron sights...fundamentals!
oh and as for accuracy i have shot alot of the surplus rounds and get around 2-3moa out of them consistently. i get alot better from rounds i roll myself, but hey the surplus rounds are great really.
i have to agree at the anemic qualities of the 223. while i have limited experience with it in civilian form,i can say for a fact that when changing pop up targets on military ranges there was always a pile of 223 slugs laying on the ground in front of the 250 and 300 meter targets where they did not penetrate the 1/8" plastic targets. im sure modern civilian ammo is more powerful and with handloads im sure ya could bump up the power, but this is just what i saw with my own eyes. they did dent the targets, but would not penetrate.
Cheap longrange? I would look at the 7 WSM for caliber, and I would look at the Savage or Stevens brand. The Savage is the most accurate out of the box rifle. And the Stevens brand is cheaper and a sub-brand of Savage.
You should be able to shoot 3/4 in.to 1 in. at 100 yards. Better If you reload. Savages are $700ish and Stevens are $400ish. hope that helps.

dont be so nieve. Those projos are those that have richocheted there from shorter range ground impacts
