Winchester White Box JHP. Watered Down?

I took the ole Ruger P95 9mm out for a shoot this morning & was kinda shocked & dissappointed. Not with the gun, but with the ammo. I finally found a box of WWB 147 gr. JHP @ the local Wal Mart. I fired a Box of WWB FMJ's first (with good results) and then followed up with the JHPs. The Hollow points sounded weak and hit very low of POA. So are the Winchester White Box JHP rounds watered down or what's going on here?

were you shooting 147gr in the FMJ as well? I am pretty sure they are loaded to standard pressures just like the rest of their ammo.

Yes sir 147gr FMJs. They were alot louder and seem to pack more punch than the 147gr JHPs.

Did you shoot up all the JHPs? Do you still have the box with the lot number? It could be that they had light charges and Winchester might should be made aware of this. AMMO recalls due to faulty loads are not that uncommon.

PLEASE don't call me sir. The aches and pains make me feel old enough. LOL!

Thanks for letting the manufacturer know about the problem. It may prove to be another recall. Better safe than sorry.

It's just the way I was brought up. Showing respect that's all.

If you have a chronograph or know someone who has one I would shoot several across the chrono and compare them. That would give you a better idea if they are loaded lightly.

Let the factory know. Don't try to figure this one out yourself. They'll use the lot number to find out if there's a problem.

Son & I Chronographed both 9 mm & .40 with my beta master chrony about three weeks ago. Results were: 9mm avg 1109 for 20 rounds with 124 gr FMJ bullet. The flat nose (truncated) I think it is called. The .40 was just over 1000. This was the same bullet in 165 grain. Not hot loads, but not soft either. There is a noticeable difference from shooting the full PDX1 FBI load at around 1150. Walmart white box seem rather middle of the road, and this may be what you are feeling. See if you can find someone with a chronograph. My reloads for the .40 run about 950 or so I use W231 at present, but will report on WSF before long...

You could save alotta folks alotta trouble if its a bad batch. Just Imagine if they are indeed loaded lightly and fail to stop an assailent. Telling the factory is the way to go.

I shot a box of Win 147 HP Personal Defense rounds a few days ago. I also had a box of Rem UMC 115 HP rounds. The 147s shot below the POA but the UMCs were on it. They both are standard loaded and feel like it. I've read though that the heavy bullets will hit low normally in comparison to lighter loads. They say you have to adjust your sights for heavy loads.

In my copy of Ammo & Ballistics 4, the WWB 147gr JHP and the 147gr FMJ show that they are both should be loaded to 990 fps and that at 25 yards the drop shoukd only be 1.1 inch. Even at 50 yards the drop should only be 4.6 inches. Very similar numbers for a number of other brands such as Remington, Magtech, Blazer, Speer, Black Hills, etc, with 147 grain bullets so anything significantly different probably indicates a problem with that lot.

Then that's a good possibility. My target was at 21 feet.
