| Senior Member ![]() | Took the .17HMR and 458 too the range...played around at the 50 yard line....The MArlin 17V with a TASCO 3x9 scope took about 10 rounds to sight in.....after that it was noting to have 5 shot groups that a Penny could cover. The only reason for them being that big was me wabbeling a little..This was shot off a Ammo box with a rolled up Towel for a rest. The soda can hunting realy surprised me.....the lille 17grain bullets just did not seem like they could do much damage.....they exploded the soda cans more than the 458 mag.....Im talking ripped off tops and chunks missing from the soda cans....When Wifee poo shot a few of them all you seen of the inpact was a mist ...like the cans vaperiszed.....then you would look on the ground and the cans were in 2 or 3 peices. I was realy surprised at the preformance of the little bullets.....big time happy with the rifle. |

| Guest Moderator | Hello. While I don't own one, I've seen the little Marlin bolt gun in this caliber make kills out of proportion to what one would expect from the paper ballistics. A friend uses one for pest control on his ranch. Relatively quiet, effective, and accurate make a combination that's easy to like. Best.

| Senior Member | Yup, those little bullets are pretty amazing. I've only shot paper targets and a golf ball once. If I miss the target I cant blame the gun or the ammo. I know I messed up the shot. Its one of my favorites to shoot. Just wish the price of ammo would come down a little. The gun store where I buy all mine actually raised the price. Wally World carries them now but I just hate to drive there to buy anything. |

| Super Moderator ![]() ![]() | I'm still learning...Isn't the .17 the same as a .177 used in a pellet gun? Please tell me more about the .17 if it's a different gun.

| Senior Member | Ox, the .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire (HMR) is like a .22 magnum necked down to .17 caliber. Velocity averages 2550 fps making it the fastest rimfire ever invented. A pellet rifle does use .177 caliber pellets, but the HMR is a polymer tipped spire point bullet. It will outshoot any .22 Its got to be one of the most accurate rounds I've ever shot. I have the Savage bull barrel .17 with an 8x32x44 scope. I leave it set at 20 power and the bullseye at 100 yards looks as big as a pie plate. Makes it almost easy! |

| Senior Member | You guys know I like the big stuff, but I had to have a .17 HMR pellet gun from h ell! All above statements are true and maybe even conservative! It is amazing what a stinkin 17 grain bullet will do to a target! I popped a yote right at 140 yds last November with mine and it took the top of his skull off! I have my Marlin 17 stainless zero'd at 100, so I gave it some "Kentucky elevation" based on the trajectory charts I had seen - because they show a fair drop after 120yds. I darn near shot over his head! the round didn't drop as much as I was expecting. I basically hit right in from of his right ear - and was kind of expecting maybe a throat shot? Shooting paper at 100yds with a .17 will make you feel like Carlos Hathcock! DL forgot to mention that when covering a 5 shot group from 100 with a penny, you can slide the penny around and not uncover the holes! The best one I have had so far at 100 on a calm day you could cover a 5 - 6 shot group with the end of a cigarette filter!

| Registered User | I have a Marlin 17V and get groups of 5 under 1/2" at 100yds. with ease using any of the v-max rounds. Have'nt had a chance to hunt with it yet but sure is a lot of fun to shoot something that accurate with no recoil and a total investment in scope and rifle of about $350. |

| Senior Member | Add my name to the list, My Stainless bull barreled Savage is amazing. Definately holds up to the Savage reputation. If you place the Hornady rounds right, it will actually take the head off an animal. If I didn't do it and see it for myself, I would have never believed it. The hollow points seem to actually drill a hole when it hits though. To compare: I killed a rabbit with a Hornady, head shot, and it completely took the head off. My brother(with his Ruger M77) shot at one and drilled a small hole through it's head and left the little brain sitting in tact about 3 feet behind it. Nasty little rounds they are. Just plain nasty. |
