Surplus, south african if you can find some. I personally would just buy a reloading set, and supplies, and make my own.

| Senior Member ![]() | If you are just looking for something to start with, I'd suggest the Lee Anniversary kit-less than $70.00 @ Cabelas. Along with it, of course, you'll need dies, trim tools, a better scale, and components. Some people don't like them because they're cheap and slower than a turret or progressive, but they put you in absolute control of every step of the reloading process and allow you to get a grip on exactly how everything works and why you are doing what you're doing. As far as cheap ammo, Cabelas also has Wolf .308 for $279.99\1000 rds in a dry box or $144.99\500 rds in a dry box. Take a look @ www.cheaperthandirt.com also.

HAH!!! Cheap .308 ammo, you make me laugh. There is no such thing anymore. If you can find the South African stuff, buy it, and buy as much as the bank will allow. The best I've found is the Indian stuff and the stuff from Serbia that comes out to about $.50 a round.

| Yeah, the darn sellers got wind of the internet hype about it being some of the best surplus and jacked up the price... jerks.

Reload your own. Don't settle for cheap foreign crap loaded by God knows who in your fine gun. Bill T.

For $0.50 a round you can shoot modern manufatured ammo, and reload for much less. With surplus 308 unobtainable, 30-06 isn't looking so bad.

Gio, if you buy Lee dies, all but the RGB "green-box" dies come with a sheet containing data for quite a few loads. I prefer Hodgdon H-4895 or Accurate 2520 for almost all of my med. cal. loadings. If you prefer FMJ's, Graf's Graf & Sons - Welcome has the Prvi Partizan 150 gr. for $9.99\100. If it were me tho, I'd just buy up a bunch of U.S. surplus bullets-they might have a few pull marks but they shoot just fine. www.hi-techammo.com has them (147gr. or 150gr.) for $55.00\1000. When I still had my .308, my favorite load was 43.2 gr. of H-4895 behind a Sierra 168 gr. MatchKing using Win. large rifle primers. The most important part, as we all know, is being safe. Read the instructions several times and compare loads against other manuals. Start low, build a few test rounds, go shoot and record the results. Step up a bit and do it again, you'll be amazed at the difference .5 gr. of powder can make. Enjoy! O.K., I lied, Hi-Tech is out of .308 bullets. Try www.patsreloading instead. They have the 147 gr. for $64.99\1000. This might be the best deal of all though, Midway USA has some never loaded Yugo military bullets for $17.99\250. I can't post the link for some reason but here's the site, MidwayUSA - Shooting Supplies, Reloading, Gun Parts, Ammunition, Rifle Scopes & Airguns

Gio...Midway is probably the most cost effective place you can deal with. You can buy anything you need for re-loading and be confident that what you order will be quality. Now, don't misunderstand, they do carry some of the lower end products, along with the top of the line stuff, if you want to buy it. I've been dealing with them for over 30 years, almost exclusively, and haven't been disappointed yet. When I was overseas, Midway kept me up and running. Give 'em a shot and see what you think. JB PS...I wouldn't buy powder and primers from them or anyone else, online or thru any catalog. Shipping will kill you. Best to get that stuff locally. Last edited by JBS; 05-16-2007 at 11:51 PM. |

I roll my own .308 and it helps. Always have ammo to shoot. Good luck with Brass. I've been getting Serbian .308 [$13.00/20] which is very accurate and is the only way I can find brass to reload. Berden primed is not easily re-loadable. America is stocking up, and stores are low.
