Several years ago, late ‘80s- early ‘90s federal sold “CB caps” .22 shorts, longs and Long rifles that were made to be extremely quiet. In fact the ads in the gun rags of the time said that a kernel of pop corn popping was louder than one of the CB caps going off. I used to shoot them out of my Marlin 39A and all you could hear was the hammer falling and then the bullet impact. They would not cycle my brothers Marlin M60. I haven’t seen any from Federal in years but I was told recently that CCI made and sold .22’s under the CB cap name here while back. -UR

There was just a slight breeze, maybe 10 mph? Just enough to make me hold about an inch in front of the rabbits head to hit it.

your problem is the bulk pack ammo. it is the lowest grade, inconsistent junk you can buy. they were underpowered, therefore they never broke the sound barrier and you never heard the "POP". inconsistant velocities, cause inconsistant accuracy. most noteable in rimfires due to the fact of how light the bullet and how slow they are. for plinking, the junk ammo is okay, for target work or hunting, especially at longer distances the cheap ammo is worthless.

Are those available at Wally World? That's the closest place within 100 miles to get .22 and centerfire ammo.

CCI mini-mags are available at my wal-mart, here in CA. I don't know that they carry velocitors. You might try looking online, or maybe at gun shows.

A/H, you gave me a good idea. Somebody's cat keeps peeing on my front door.... I could save the owners a trip to get it neutered.

I shoot mostly the cheap bulk stuff and it works just fine every time. I have a growing respect for federal premium.

I have no trouble with Federal 550 bulk packs. They are much cleaner than Remington Golden. I need to take a cleaning rod and patches to the sandpit to mop out the barrel with Remingtons. With the Remingtons I regularly have primer failures, too. I can regularly hit a 1 1/2 gallon jug at 65 yards with the Ruger MK II with any of the bulk ammo that I have tried. I am only disappointed with the Remington failure to fire and dirt.

Yeah, the Remington Lightning High velocity ammo is not my favorite. I never had any failures with it, but it is definately some dirty ammunition.

I think that American Eagle was worse. I came home with black hands. I am happy enough with the Federal 550 value pack that it is an important part of my ammo stash. I just rotate the bulk packs, and have a few hundred packs of CCI's.

Hmmm seems like I have to disagree with some here, the Missus and I have been shooting bulk pack .22's for quite some time now and we as in the 2 of us have never had a misfire, stoppage or accuracy problem with any of it. Now maybe we have simply been blessed with pickin the right boxes up but I somehow doubt it. Our targets out to 100 yds seem to fair the same demise as those at 7. So I am not certain what is wrong with anyone elses bulk ammo. Oh! AND PS: at this point we're at the 10,000 round mark for bulk .22's in just the Ruger. So updates? Comments?

I only have trouble with the Remington Goldens. I have quite a few failures to fire with them. In the Gun Digest Book of .22 Rimfire, the author, James House, measured the rims of lots of different .22's. The Remington Goldens were all over the page, and thinner than others. CCI's were more consistent and thicker.

Well Earl, if you and your wife are just blessed with the luck of the ammo, then I am too. I agree 100 percent. I've easily hit targets with the cheap stuff out to 150 yards.

While out shooting my CZ 82 I took along my 22 Remington speedmaster that use to jam after the 2nd shot useing Remington brick ammo. I bought a 50 round box of Federal Champion and they worked perfectly and were surprising accurate in my gun. Are these low end 22 cartridges ??? |
