Question 7.62 x 54R - Who sells (cheap) bulk?

7.62 x 54R appears to be in tight supply these days, at least as far as bulk or surplus is concerned. Anyone know of place (preferably online) who still sells at a reasonable price?

Hello! Welcome to the forum. I was at a gun show on Sunday and was paying $35 for 135 rounds. It was less by the case. There did not seem to be a shortage there. You can Google "Ammunition" or look in Shotgun News. (on your local news stand)

Thanks! (for your reply and the welcome)
Maybe I should explaine where my concern originates: I live in MN and I just bought a M44 and I have a hard time finding cheap ammo in the big "box stores" (Walmart, Fleetfarm, Dick's Sporting, etc.). Some (like Dick's) don't even carry the round and others seem to be constantly sold out. Maybe it's just my bad luck because I have a new rifle and want to take it out. In addition I have to admit that I am cheap and I don't want to pay over $10 for 20 rounds.

There are plenty of places online that have it, for much less than 10 bucks per 20.

Try J&G sales, Aimsurplus, Century Arms, Southern Ohio Gun. Or the gun show. Good luck. And welcome to the site!

Yes, there are a lot of Mosin shooters (I assume that you have a Mosin) here. Don't be a one post member.

Thanks for all of the advise. I'll check out those websites and the Shotgun News.
Yes, I do have a Mosin. I bought it as a "plinker" for $99 but the more I shot it, the more I like it. I'll do my best do stay active.
Thanks again!

Since you're in Mn., you might want to check with Sportsmans Guide. Welcome to G&G!

Ditto on recommendation toolman gave on sportsman guide located in South St Paul, MN next to Mississippi river and freeway 494.

I picked up about 740 rounds this summer when they had bulk. The availability of bulk ammo is looking ugly in general I'd say. And thank God I got 500 rounds of the greek 30-06 when I did even though that still seems to be around in places.

I just think there is too much uncertainty on the political landscape. Stuff like what the gov of California signed off on does not help keep the prices down on our sport.

But I would check out the other sources .22guy gave and at least pick up 500 rounds NOW! The price is only going to go up until the next pres is elected and who know what could happen then. If it is you know who...the flood gates will be open and if you like guns and have testicles your on the short list.

Checked out the sportsman guide and all the other links. Sportsman actually has 7.62 in stock and decent prices.

Killer: Do you know if they have a store front, or are they mail order/internet only?

Not to hijack a post from killer, but yes, they do have a retail store. It's right behind the truckstop @ 494 and Hardman Ave. in S. St. Paul.

I will have to check them out. Thanks, toolman!

Short update (in case anyone cares): I did place an order with Sportmans Guide yesterday morning (10/17). My wife just called me and told me that UPS drop of a "heavy" package for me. I realize that I have the advantage of being in the same state as they are, but I still think that their turn-around time was pretty impressive.

AMMOMAN.COM d/b/a Discount Distributors

$100/500 rnds.
$890/5000 rnds.
Several other options available as well.

Between myself and a friend of mine, we have ordered in excess of 50,000 rounds of various ammo from Ammoman; never a problem. And, price includes shipping; so the price listed is your "delivered" price.

I don't know if you've found anything yet. However, Midway USA has 7.62x54R at a good price.

Two 440 round cans for $99 - that's 880 rounds for $99 plus shipping. If you live near Minneapolis (guessing at that from some of the other posts), the shipping would probably be less than $35.

That's $134 for 880 rounds, or about $3.05 for each 20 round pack.

Besides which, there's nothing cooler than seeing the neighbors' eyes when you get a big green box full of ammo delivered to your home from UPS.

Yes, it's Berdan primed and corrosive, but hey, you'd have to go to .22 LR to find a less expensive ammo and that makes for an afternoon of fun for very little money.

It's not too bad, but the shipping price is way to high. I got a 440rd can off gunbroker.com and shipping was $16 It's one of those rare sellers that isn't out to make money of shipping when selling products. Picked up a 300rd can at a gun show last month for $49...so I wouldn't say 54r is tough to find at a fair price...you should never have to pay more than $4 per 20rds, anything else unless yer looking for hunting or match ammo it to high. Just my 2 cents...3 with tax.

I live just North of Seattle and they want $50 and change for shipping. That's nuts!

I had the same thing sent to me from J&G Sales for $38 shipping.

That seems pretty high to me. according to the checkout on there web sight, shipping to my local is only $19.13 But I haven't ordered anything yet. Am I in for any surprises on shipping cost I don't know about?

I've found that shipping from the major internet dealers is reasonable. They charge us what they are charged to send the items by UPS, FedEx or USPS.

Some of the companies have machines to tell you what the shipping costs will be before you confirm the sale.

When I used to buy things from people on eBay, most of those people charged quite a bit more for shipping than what I would have had to pay to send the same thing to them. I think they were charging for their time going to and from the shipping office.

The large dealers often have shipping facilities in their warehouse and they get a slightly better rate because of the one-stop, volume shipping they do with the commercial shippers.

If it costs more or less for you to get 50 pounds of ammo than it does someone else, it's because of the distance involved in shipping or the "shipping lanes" that you live in.

Some dealers will bring ammo to a big gun show for you to pick up, and you don't pay shipping costs to them. You do pay to get into the gun show and you pay your own gas costs to and from that gun show, so that's still part of the "shipping" cost.

Powder Valley does that for the Wannemacher's Tulsa Gun Show with their bullets, powder and primers.

It's likely that high for me because I'm not near to them... I'm in the Pacific Northwest and that means across the Rockies. The longer you have to send something that weighs as much as that ammo, the more it's going to cost.

I just found this on the web. Classic Arms (do a search if you're interested, the price isn't any different than elsewhere, I think) posted this about their 7.62x54R surplus ammo:
_____________________________
OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS 7.62X54R AMMO HAS VIRTUALLY DRIED UP IN THE U.S.. I AM TOLD IT IS BECAUSE THE U.S. GOV'T IS OUTBIDDING THE IMPORTERS AND SENDING THIS AMMO STRIAIGHT TO IRAQ TO TRAIN AND SUPPLY THE IRAQI MILITARY AND SECURITY FORCES. IT SEEMS THAT THEY ARE OUTFITTED WITH DRAGONUV TYPE RIFLES AND THIS IS THE ROUND AND RIFLE WITH WHICH THEY ARE MOST FAMILIAR AND REQUIRE THE LEAST TRAINING.

THAT IS WHY I AM SO HAPPY TO HAVE SCORED SOME OF THIS AMMO. THIS IS THE BULGARIAN BRASS CASED 7.62X54R YELLOW TIP. IT FUNCTIONS FLAWLESSLY IN ALL NAGANT TYPE RIFLES AS WELL AS THE SEMI-AUTO VARIENTS SUCH AS THE PSL ABOVE. THE PRICE IS SLIGHTLY HIGER THAN WE HAVE SEEN IN THE PAST, BUT NOT NEARLY AS HIGH AS IT WILL BE IN THE FUTURE AS SURPLUS STOCKPILES OF THIS AMMO CONTINUE TO BE GOBBLED UP AT A RAPID PACE. I HONESTLY THINK IT IS WISE TO STOCK UP NOW. WE ARE OFFERING 3 DIFFERENT QUANTITIES TO BEST SUIT YOUR NEEDS.

300 ROUND SEALED TIN.................55.00

400 ROUNDS SHIPPED IN A REUSABLE U.S. 50 CAL AMMO CAN.......77.50

1200 ROUND CASE.............................................. ......................................$199.95

I still have several hundred rounds of my surplus ammo. Plus, I got some PRVI reloadable rounds from Graf&Sons a while back. I want to rebarrel one of my rifles to build a long range gun using the 7.62x54R and that I'm going to use the good brass for the good barrel. BTW, Graf&Sons is a good place to check on regularly -- they occasionally have some exceptional deals on PRVI.
