| 17 HMR Problems I sighted in my new Savage 9317 HMR and had 4 of 6 casings split. They were the Hornady 17gr. Varmint Express V-Max bullets. Has anyone else had this type of problem? http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y84/brush_buster/IMG_1003.jpg |

| Without closer inspection I cant tell but looking at the picture it looks like the casing is going into the freebore or something because the crimp is still in the mouth of the casing. Are the ones that didnt split still crimped?Even a .22lr has pressure enough to open the mouth up straight with the body or in this case the neck.At any rate it is something you cant and shouldnt work on.If the gun is new look in the manual that came with it and find the customer service# and talk to them.If the chamber isnt bored deep enough to allow the casing to open up it causes bullet release problems and builds very high pressures and probably causing the casing to split. The gun could blow up or break if this is the case. I advise not firing this firearm until the problem is resolved.I am surprised you dont have powder residue on the casing. sam. |

| i have heard of this a few times. try a different brand of ammo, and talk with the rifle manufacturer. |

| I've heard quite a bit about this, but never had it happen in two different Savage 17 HMR rifles and hundreds of rounds fired. I would follow lefty o's advice.
