How is the Wolf .223?

I just got a new .223 rifle, and bought some Wolf FMJ 55 gr steel cased shells. I was wandering how good they are. Thanks in advance.

Mostly plinking level in my experience. They work just not great ammo.

I bought a case for my Stag upper/spikes lower and it didn't work for crap. So I shot about60 rounds, which was a PITA and sold the rest. Some people have good luck with it, but an AR is no SKS.

I bought a box of 30-06 wouldn't bet my life on it. Doesn't fire every time

That's weird, because the Wolf 7.62x39mm is great stuff....

But then again, the wolf .30 Carbine ammo is pretty bad. It smells horrible and doesn't extract every time.

I guess it wouldn't hurt to try it. But I would take some different ammo just in case when you go to the range. Cause you would hate to waste a good range trip.

Rem742 has a good point. Guns that are rather crudely built (SKS, AK-47) feed the wolf stuff very well. A bolt action rifle such as the Savage 200 will probably feed and shoot it just fine. It expect to get really tight groups with wolf ammo.

While the ammo is very crudely made, I have found it extremely reliable when it comes to firing. It isn't very reliable when it comes to feeding in autoloaders though (except for the SKS and AK's that I've used wolf in).

use 7.62 for my SKS and even 7.62x54r in my mosin works fine but my ar dont like it at all. but since your ussing it in a bolt gun it cant hurt to try.

It shot quite well today. It was only about 10 yds so it didn't make much of a difference. i would have shot at 100 yds, but it was raining for most of the day and the bench was soaked so I had a hard time aiming that distance.

Fine for plinking. Would want to have to rely on it for

I know it's an old post, but figured I'd add something I was recently told regarding this.

From what I hear, Wolf with steel casings is a bad idea in any AR style rifle... the steel casing is heavier, and doesn't always eject like it should... possibly causing damage.

There's also the lacquer on the shell casings which heats up and can get left behind in the chamber. I wouldn't shjoot Wolf through my AR for anything.

I shoot the poly-coated wolf through my AR's. It doesn't seem to bother them. It is a little dirtier than premium ammo, but for the money, it is a good deal. I can see where the lacquer coated could be a problem. My buddy shoots it in his AR with no problems so far, but I stick with the poly-coated.

You arent jokin. I have both, and it is just too dirty of an ammo to put thru my Bushmaster. My SKS is a different story. I figure if the ammo and the gun are made in the same place then they are made for eachother!

I've shot over a 1000 rounds of Wolf .223 through my Rock River AR with out any failures or jams. It does have a smell to it and I clean my gun after every shoot but at the price ammo is now I'm sticking with it . Now the Russian Bear ammo is total crap, I bought a box of it in 9mm and .223 and it fails about every 5th round. Just my .02 worth.
