When I was fourteen, my horse and I got peppered with rock salt 'cause we happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It didn't do any permanent damage(volunteered for Vietnam three years later), but it sure stung to beat all. I think it hurt me worse than the horse. The rodeo was also painful, carrying all that salt. I don't think I'd put an animal thru that.Scotty

Never thought of paint-ball guns. They DO leave quite an impression, without damage.

They're going to plea-bargarn down to a misdemeanor, fine, and restitution to the owner. I had a problem many years ago with stray cats/feral cats. After introducing them to the bb gun, all I had to do was just shake the gun, and off they ran.
One of my neighbors has an English Mastiff that came on my property and killed one of our dogs, he also threatened my wife. I called the owner and told him that if I caught the dog on my place, he would turn up missing- permanently. He told me the dog was worth $800. I told him it was worth about 35 cents, the price of a rifle shell. I finally got a running shot at him and missed. The owner must have heard the shot because he drove by real slowly a couple of minutes later. Haven't seen the dog even in his yard since then, maybe he took it to his daughter's place about 50 miles from here.

The Box O' Truth #33 - Rock Salt in a Shotgun - Page 1

These guys have tested Rock Salt. The shot cup did more damage than the salt.

This is one really neat site.

In some cities/communities it is illegal to fire a gun with in the city/community limits. You may find it could cost you more then it's worth.

Check your local laws first. If you live in a rural area, well then obviously not as big an issue.

Don't do it just to be cruel to the dog. I understand it can get old to deal with, got plenty-o-neighbors that don't deserve to own one,two or even three... I refuse to name names. lol Besides, is it the dogs fault the owner is irresponsible? Is it the dogs fault if it was abandoned and just looking to survive? Why not ask the local dog catcher for a humane trap and catch it that way. If it is hungry, it won't take long.

Don't blame the poor animal for a humans ignorance...

It sounds like it would be better to just shoot it in the air to make a big bang. That might scare the dog off. Sounds like it don't work too well.

Paintball sounds effective and fun! I, however, would probably shoot it, BBQ it, and invite the owner over for dinner...

An acquaintance of mine loaned his pellet gun to a friend of his and when the guy returned the gun he said "I didn't know it would kill it" He borrowed the gun to scare away a cat. The pellet guns of today would very easily kill a dog with a lung or heart shot. Maybe not immediately but without medical attention they will die. 8 to 10 grains at 1000 fps or more will kill. Paintballs will not penetrate and will get their attention. They will have no attention if you use a pellet gun!

I've all ways managed to holler at a stray or neighbors dog and it tucks tail and runs.

So I would be careful when displaceing a dog or cat they have more rights than we do, if your caught...A.H

once i had a guy move in near me that was a "gangsta" and he had a pitbull
that pitbull cried all night every night.
i went over to him while he was sitting in his car with his "gangsta"CRAP THUMPING ON THE STEREO
and kicked his car to get his attention.
i told him to shut that f$%^&* dog up or i will and turn that crap off it's the middle of the night.
he started to get out of his car then realized i had my 1911a1 on my hip.
he moved the next day.

i was so mad i couldnt see straight.

Shooting dogs

In Ohio according to the Game Warden,, it is legal to shoot a dog on your property (rural area) if you kill it. If you wound it, the owner has the right to sue you.
When I lived on the farm I just made sure I killed it and that the body was never found. Was nice having a river as a property line. (The neighbor's dogs killed 32 cats/kittens on our farm in ONE night - thus starting the war . BTW: I won with a 100% kill rate of 4 dogs. Sheriff or Dog Warden wouldn't handle it so I did. Felt bad for the dogs but once they taste blood....
Other neighbor had retired Gereman Shepard police dogs. We had written pernission to shoot them ANY time they got loose from their chains. Only happened once though.

Salt will eat up the barrel if not careful.
Indeed....shooting salt through your barrel is a horrible idea. Steel doesn't do well at all when exposed to salt, imagine it being forced through your barrel at high speed and pressure.
