cashing in brass for money

An idea struck me today that maybe I should save the brass casings and cash them in. Has anyone done this before, is brass worth much?

I would say you could sell them to reloaders for more than you could sell them to a recycler but then again i am not sure of the price of brass.

I do it all the time, here I can get an average of $1.10 to $1.25 per pound of brass. I pick it up all the time then pull out what I want for reloading, and scrap the rest. The will usually take the nickel plated casings as well, so grab em when you see them.

Sell the boxer-primed stuff to other reloaders and haul the berdan stuff to your local scrap yard.

Hmmm, I know a public range where I could rake up a pickup load of brass, it's all over the place like gravel.

Do it I say, I usually take the dog out with me and spend a few hours mining local desert shooting spots, picked up 24lbs yesterday in about 2 hours. When I got home and weighed everything I had, I came up with 69 pounds, which comes out to $86.25. I am waiting until I have about 150 or so pounds, then I will cash it all in and start buying my reloading setup. From there, I will use brass money to pay for powder and primers. I plan on reloading for my .223 since the ammo is getting out of hand expensive. I also have as of now about 1300 .223 brass cases that I picked up, so my reloading cost will be projectiles only for the most part...I'll be able to reload 1000 rds for about $75.

So I say, what the heck...take the time when you go shooting, grab brass as you find it and keep your own, even if you don't reload it still makes you money you can use for whatever you want...plus your getting a little bit of trash off the ground. You can sell it as well if you clean it up nice, or jsut recycle it, going rates average between $1.00 and 1.25 per pound.

Well thanks, hope that's not just sarcasm...I would say I'm cheap. But hey, I like to save a few bucks where I can. Plus getting a little trash is great too. You can only imagine the amount of junk that folks are too dang lazy to take back home and throw away. People who shoot in the desert bring all kinds of crap to shoot at, then just leave it there. Bottles, appliances, tires, wood...you name it, it's out there. I always do my best to bring back as much as I can when I go out, and throw it away properly. Hopefully when our new shooting park opens that will change. They say it'll be the biggest one on the west coast.
