.32-40 Winchester Question

Can anyone tell me all the firearms that use this round? It is between a .303 and a .22 round so you can judge the size. That is the box on the side.

Here we go again, as I recall it was developed for the Ballard Union Hill rifles No.8 and 9, Marlin and Winchester chambered some single shots and lever guns in the late 1880's...Stevens 44 was chambered for this for a while...

This cartridge is mostly historical . . .

. . . in that its time came and went along with the production of guns designed to fire the cartridge.

As with your .358 cartridge question, I feel you might connect with individuals on this forum with data on years of production for guns chambered in this caliber. However, this is a much older cartridge than the .358 Winchester so your answer will come from the latter 1800's and early 1900's.

Testing and expanding knowledge. Can't google 30-40 Winchester if you don't even know it exists. And this way a lot of people can learn at least something about some little known rounds. And even some more popular rounds. Oh btw I dont smoke dont do drugs dont gamble and drink very very little.

Congrats to Capt Mil Col

Hey, asking is how we learn things. There is no such thing as a
bad question if the asker is sincere.

I know the Marlin 1893 was chambered for it, I have one. Pretty sure some Savage and Winchester lever guns where chambered for it as well. Originally a target round I believe.

Since you didn't say which .32-40 I'll assume the W-W.
It was introduced in 1884 for the single shot Ballard. It's not quite as powerful as the .30-30 smokeless but was considered a Whitetail Deer round.
It's the caliber the John Wayne Commemrative was made in.
It was used in several single shot riflers and in both Winchester and Marlin lever actions.
If you stumble across an older .32-40 use blackpowder only to build loads.

The .32-40 Winchester is used in:

Ballard Union Hill #8
Ballard Union Hill #9
Stevens 44
Marlin 1893
John Wayne Commemorative

General:
Marlin, Savage and Winchester Single shot and Lever Rifles.

Thanks for all your help guys.
Anybody know any others? Or any more specific rifles?

According to Accurate Arms, it was Harry Pope's favorite cartridge and they have data in two flavors; a full power version and a reduced load "schuetzen" version.

The 32-40 is an accurate round and re-loading data can be found anywhere. This (Schuetzen) cartridge is common in Europe. It's a lot of fun i n single shots such as the Ballard or Winchester 1885. Accurate powders has a nice line of smokeless powders for this unique round. Cast bullets work well. I have shot them in the vintage Winchester 94's and one day hope to own a single shot in this caliber. Right now I have other toys to be blessed with such as the 38-55,40-65 and 45-70.. Good luck!
