| Senior Member | whats the difference? Okay, i know this has been on here before, but forgot where i saw it. Anyways, .223 and 5.56, i'd like some help. 5.56 is hotter than .223 right? so .223 can fire out of a rifle chambered for 5.56 but 5.56 should not be fired out of a rifle chambered for .223 right? I've found an AR-15 i like, it's chambered for 5.56 and would like to find stuff out before I purchase. |

| If it's chambered and says 5.56 on the receiver, you CAN shoot .223 out of it. But if it's chambered .223 and also says that on the receiver, you CAN NOT shoot 5.56 out of it. As for One being hotter than the other, I'll have to pass and allow someone else to answer that one. I thought they burned the same/had the same velocity and energy ect.ect.ect.? Again, that I don't know. Maybe on this one we'll both learn something?

| You done got it right! You can shoot .223 out of a 5.56 gun but not 5.56 out of a .223 gun.
