.40 stopping power and effectiveness

I have only shot 9MM and 22LR in the past. Pretty new to this. I am picking up a Springfield XD .40 Subcompact. Looking for input on what people who carry a .40 as a carry gun use for ammo. Looking for the most stopping power. Seems everything I read gives a different opinion. I want the opinion of people who actually carry this gun.

Thanks Guys!!!!!!!

double tap makes a round for the .40 that is a fire breather!! check out their page...I'd provide the link but I don't know how to use that feature yets. google Double Tap Ammo and you can look at their performance. There is one load that is particularly nasty although it's been a while since I visited so I can't remember what grain is was in.

These two episodes of The Box O' Truth convinced me to carry Winchester Ranger SXT:
The Box O' Truth #10 - The Water Box O' Truth - Page 1
The Box O' Truth #13 - The Water Box O' Truth Part 2 - Page 1

The above are why I avoid Hydrashoks and tell everyone I know to do the same.

I carry the 165 grain version (P/N: RA40TA).

I've been told by my rangemaster that that's exactly the brand that my local Sheriff's department uses as issued ammo.

I do it different. I hand load 165gr Rainier plated bullets over 7.5gr of Longshot powder. I do not have a crony but recoil is a little heavier than factory which suppose to run around 1,150 FPS. No problems with high pressure signs or operation. These are used in 2 GLOCK pistols, G23 and G27.
My pistols seem to like the 165gr bullets best.

I used to carry Hydras in my Glock 22 but have since gone to Hornady TAP 165-grainers.

I wish stupid Illinois would trust its citizens enough to carry where I would worry about this all! Two states in the US with no carry, and I happened to have lived in them BOTH!

But back to the subject, I would like a 40 cal over a 9mm for carry, but a snubby .357 mag is better. As long as you only need six shots, that is. Placement, placement, placement.

Hornady TAP ammo is great. Give it a try.

Hornady TAP FPD Ammunition

Hornady TAP FPD Ammunition

And here's a link to a place with decent prices of TAP in assorted calibers...
Hornady Tap Handgun 9 Mm 124 Gr. Tap-Fpd 25 Rds., Pistol Ammunition, Hornady at Sportsman's Guide

As for STUPID ILLINOIS and them TRUSTING their citizens to CCW, I agree with you 210% Gandog56. Illinois and Wisconsin both need to get on board the CCW wagon.

Ain't going to happen as long as Daley is holding Chicago. But we digress. If I was just wanting stopping power in an XD, why not just get it in .45?

Well I'm not in Chicago (THANK GOD!). Daley can kiss my, well you know what Daley can kiss. Daley can only control Chicago, for now that is. Illinois' problem is as I like to call him Gov. Blowjobavich, Obama, Mark Kirk and a few others that need to be voted out. Maybe then things can and will change for us. But if people don't join forces and take a stand, nothing will change...

And I can't wait until he has to announce the ban is lifted. Wilmette already lifted theirs, knowing if it went to court it would only end up lifted anyhow. They also said they never had a real problem before or after the ban though, the Mayor of Wilmette added. Why the ban then? Just to get elected I bet?

Where you shoot in Northern Illinois? The closest rifle range to me that doesn't cost an arm and a leg or you need to be a member and they have a long waiting list is almost 50 miles from my Montgomery home.
