BEST .357 Hollow Point for my Rugar GP-100

Last month I purchased a brand new Ruger GP-100. It takes .357 Magnum OR 38 Special. I've used about 5 or 6 boxes (~300) .38 Specials at the Target Range and tried a box (50) of .357's....... WOW what a difference.

I am currently looking for HOME DEFENSE "real" ammo and not "target" ammo. Can you reccomend a good Manufacturer of .357 Magnum HOLLOW POINT, jacketed, 158 Grain or similar to satisify my needs ??

I seem to like Winchester, but I'm sure there are plenty other great brands out there. I do NOT want re-loads and in actuality I only need 20 - 30 and a box of 50 would be the max. I need. I will NOT use them on the Range, just for home self-defense, Heaven forbid I ever have to use them.

If it likes Winchesters then I would use the 145gr 357Mag silvertip.
Centerfire Handgun

EVERY source I go to order them from is "out of stock", what a bummer !! Are these bullets so popular and in demand or are they being discontinued ??

I shoot remington 125 jacketed hollow point. It kicks quite a bit. Home defense situation you will not feel the gun kick. Good luck.

The Federal 155 gr HP and Remington 165 gr Golden Saber both show to be 94% fight stoppers.

Just as with the Winchester ammo, EVERY place I find this ammo (online) is always "out of stock" !!

What's with the shortages of .357 HOLLOW POINT ??

I have a pet load I make for my Ruger Security Six - but for factory defense loads, I favor the Federal Hydrashocks - if it's good enough for the FBI, it suits me.

The 125 grain JHP is generally considered the best for defense in .357 by those who claim to know. Can't go wrong with Winchester or Federal. I believe the Remington load is toned down for lighter recoil, stay away from it. Perhaps that's no longer true.

See as a "rookie/newbie" I learn something new all the time. I was making the assumption that "more is better" and that 140 and 158 grain would be more "powerful" and thus better for defensive shooting, hitting harder and faster, Heaven forbid an intruder ever broke into my house !!

Thanks !!

The 125 grain weight has a better reputation for dropping people because it's faster than the heavier bullets and expands violently, staying in the person and dumping all it's energy in the bad guy as it mushrooms out to something like 60-70 caliber. The 158 grain bullets won't, and will overpenetrate. Or so I've read. Statistics on stopping power seem to bear this out. Two police officers that were also gun writers, Massad Ayoob and Evan Marshall, both agree from their studies on decades of police shooting stats over the years that the 125 grainer is best in .357 when used for defense.
