Thumbs up New M-16 caliber

I got this off of www.strategypage.com

The Special Ops/Special Forces people in Iraq/Afghanistan are field testing a new caliber for the M-16, 6.8mm. or .27 caliber. suppositly all they had to do was change the barrel and make a few "minor" modifications. It is hoped it will give the average soldier greater range and hitting power with minimal weight increase.

Go to strategy page, click on Infantry then tools section and then on weapons of the world, it is the second article down.

it will never go anywhere, mark my

words. Big waste of time and money. The 223 does fine, IF you get a solid hit. Most hits are poor ones. Just cause you see the guy or his clothes "twitch", does NOT mean that you hit him. troops are FOS about such things. Just like they've LIED about .45 ball ammo all these years. It won't even reliably stop a coon or a chuck with a chest hit.

what makes you think THAT, sonny?

a bunch of LIES you've heard and read? :-) i"ve shot a lot of animals, with lots of loads, and .45 ball sucks as a transmitter of shock,or as a destroyer of tissue. Most of the serious students of the pistol know that I'm correct in this assessment, too.

223 is ok..was designed to reduce weight....I carried an M16 in combat....it did the job ok....I prefered the sniper rifle...but thats oranges to bannas.....I own a 223 and an AK47 (and SKS).....I look at the bullets and there is a big diffrence between a 22 cal 55grain 223 and a 120ish grain 7.62 (30 cal).....Just as one can look at a 9mm and 45acp and see the diffrences......without getting into the accuracy vs reliability debate...ie ak vs m16.....I still think that we should look at adopting the 308 as our main battle rifle cartrige...I delt with the midle east nut cases and trust me you have to put them pigglets down hard to stop them...you add urban warfare..buildings..cars barracades etc.....and the 308 can reach through these obsticals better than 223. This all said I would not want to get shot by any thing....

u guys r Freudian JOKES. no u CAN'T

just look at ammo and tell its performance. Indeed, the better 9mm jhps make the .45 ball rd look SICK as to the performnance (PROVABLE on animals, not just bs war stories, or lucky flukes). A good 223 sp makes .30 ak ball look EQUALLY ineffective. We aint stuck with ball ammo. There's only a FEW hundred thousand men in the Marines and infanty, and a LOT of them are NOT tasked to be just riflemen, either. Since there's about 30million rifle owners, in the US the odds are about 200 to one that you CAN be using softpoints or jhp's, if you WANT to.

The miitary got away from the.30 cal for a GOOD reason. they fire THOUSANDS of rifle rds for every hit that they get, and most hits are POOR ones. So you lug around twice as much wt,for NOTHING. Plus, for the civilian, the .22lr conversion unit lets you practice 7x as much, for the same money, on steel gongs, on indoor ranges, etc. The shorty AR's can be disassemble and carried concealed, too, a major advantage for tactical type missions.

7.62X51 is tops for defending freedom. .223 is good for defending the home.
