On home defense, I have a hard time believing they would prosecute a homeowner who shot after first being shot at. Shooting at someone walking out the door with your stereo is one thing, but shooting someone who just shot at you should be perfectly legal in all but the worst states. That's where forensics come in and find the bullet hole right next to where you were. Regarding calibers, I do believe certain LE officers have gone to 223 rifles for their low penetration as well as the versatile AR platform. Even snipers in many cases use 223, but some use 308. Thing is that they would have to choose their shots VERY carefully. For home defense, where you are likely to be caught off guard and have to act in a split second, I see no place for 308. 308 isn't for home defense, it's for homeland defense. Now personal defense against dangerous animals is another story. If I had to face wolves and bears, or in my area rabid dogs, I would be happy to have a 308 over a 223.

It is good to have an array of different calibers for different situations. You can never have too many tools.

Neither an AR-15 or M1A is good for home defense due to over penatration and likely loose rounds flying through the neighborhood. My weapon of choice is the shotgun or 9mm carbine. Remember if you are going to confront a bandit in your home you have to be ready to kill him. Reasons are many. Even wounded he will fire back at you or your family. He might not be alone so after shooting bandit make sure to get police rolling to your house defend your family . If you wound only he could turn around and sue you and get your wealth by using the jury to rob you. A dead person of unknown quality in your house is hard to explain . Remember if the bad guy enters your house he will use violence to guarantee his escape, dont be the victim of that violence. The house I now live on was robbed twice in the last 15 years. I am ready to stop someone cold if they wish to do harm to me and my family. |

I cant stand people who say the best thing to do if someone breaks into your home is call the police and hide. I've listened to people at work that are so against violence they actually say they wouldn't harm someone to protect their family. I remember coming home a few months back with my wife. Well, as I walked into the living room I heard a bang from upstairs. Both the cats were downstairs, and they acted suprised. It was almost like I went into a different "mode" so to speak. I didn't have any guns downstairs(stupid) so I grabbed a knife and slowly started going through the rooms(bedroom first to get my Mossberg), closets, and under the beds. The first thought that ran through my mind was to protect my family, RUN never crossed my mind. Defending ones family is a natural instinct, I have no problem trading or sacrificing my life to save my wife, and down the road my kids.

LOL, I know. Seriously, I never found out what made that noise. It was a pretty good bang too, like someone had taken a gallon jug of milk or water and dropped it on the floor. No pictures had fallen, nothing was knocked over. Back to the subject, IMO you would be better served with building a nice AR and buying a Remington or Mossberg. You will have money left over, and have a wider field in which these weapons can be used. Your home protection will be taken care of without the worry of killing someone 5 houses down, and the AR can still hit a human size target at 300 yards no problem. 5.56/.223 can be picked up anywhere, ammo is cheap, plus you can still hunt smaller game and even deer with it as a SHTF rifle. Or, if your like me, will be perfect for the when zombies... nevermind.

I thought I was the only onw preparing for the zombie invasion. How cool. Now I see that it is more of a retorical question than one that might have an answer. I am going to get the AR and later when I have more money get a .308. I think I don't use rifles for home defense, so targets better beware

Well, think about this. Say I had $1,500. The Mossberg I bought has a folding stock, 7+1, sling, heat shield, cost me $200 at a show, and was in great shape. I purchased a Winchester model 70 .30-06 with a decent scope for like $500-$550 for deer hunting. So now I'm up to $750 spent, and have $750 left for an AR. The shot gun will be better suited for indoors, a bolt action .308 or .30-06 will do what you need from an M1A1(or atleast for me, when are you going to be defending yourself at a 1000 yards?) and the AR covers anything below 300 yards with ease. So..... now as for the zombies, ohhhh I long for the day when resident evil comes to a town near me |

Why do you think I have 2000 rounds of 7.62 x .39 saved up. I am ready for those Zombies. WHat was it that opened your eyes, Dawn of the Dead or Night of the Living Dead?

Of the horror movies, I've only seen the newer Dawn of the Dead, and of course both of the Resident Evils. I've always been a huge gamer, playing all the Quakes and Dooms(although they arn't actually zombies).

Funny how a video game, of all things, makes you really appreciate ammo. The Resident Evil and Silent Hill series' are my favorites.
