| M16 vs. AK-47 Today I was shooting my M16 at the local range when I was approached by an older man who had a full auto AK-47. We started talking right from the get go because we both had automatic rifles. But things soon went sour, He was saying that the AK is a far more superior weapon because of its ability to withstand harsh conditions and its dependability. I told him that if we were in a fire fight with each other that I would much rather carry the M16 and he argued that the .223 round was inferior compared to his 7.62 x 39. I wasn't surprised that I could hit my target far better than he could but he then asked to fire my rifle to prove he was a better shot with the AK. I declined because I was still the better shot...I still can't believe that he honestly thinks the AK is superior to the M16. Am I wrong or something??? Somebody please tell me this guy is nuts... |

| Depends on how you define 'Better' |

| HMFIC ![]() | I like the M16...but the AK is a looser gun so it can actually rust up, but if you spray it with oil and open the bolt it will start working again... can't say the same about the AR. Then again..it depends on what you need it to do.

| i would take the AK to combat because of the reliability. Off topic, but do you have to get special permission to fire class 3 guns(like both of yours) at your range

| well when i fired the m4 right after the AK at a full auto range(both were in easy 5 round bursts) the ar was more controllable, but thats because it is a smaller round of course. I still choose the AK :right:

| Stoner designed the AR series with accuracy a first priority. He also designed it as a semi-auto. The military added the full-auto requirement. The initial approval was for semi-auto rifles to the USAF, to replace the aging M1/M2 Carbines used to guard nuclear sites. The .223 gave them longer range, equal recoil, and easy training. Stoner actually liked the 63 and 63A system for a true military weapon. He had upgraded the reliability, and enhanced the total flexibility of the package in this. M16 vs. AK47 = AK all the way. :full: In semi-auto mode I'll take the M16/AR or better yet the semi-auto M14 type rifle |

| Even though the M1 Garand was the first MBR I learned to shoot (What a great rifle!) I'll stay with the M14 MBR. |

| This debate will never be won by either side and I hate to get caught up in this discussion but I'll take the M16, 5.56 any day over the AK and 7.62x39! |

| As a personal weapon I'd take an AR over an AK anyday. Unless you're the lazyest SOB to ever, you'll never use your rifle in "Combat Conditions".

| I assume the “lazy” comment is directed at the issue of cleanliness and reliability of the AR as it relates. Though I would personally take the AR over the AK, I do have a tendency to agree that this argument is about as useful as the “chicken VS egg” argument…who cares which was first, we eat what we like. Same with rifles…we shoot what we like. |
