AR15 for Deer Hunting!

Yes, I'm pretty sure I could drive around in a circle for a few hours. Might make a mess in the car with no pee break, but still. Just out of curiosity, what pistol are you using, and at what range?

The Pistol is a SIG P226. and the range is 15 yards or less. Bein' a weak caliber and all I like to hunt before I harvest............

Some states don't allow small calibres for deer hunting, I believe Tennesee is one that doesn't allow anything smaller than .24 calibre, which means it's legal to use a .25 auto but not a .223, which bets the question; which is more likely to kill a deer with one shot?
Range and terrain are more of a factor than the size of the bullet, for short range heavy brush I'd reach for the .44 Magnum, 4570, .357 or the Combat Commander in .45ACP. For open ground out to 100 metres the 5.56x45mm, over 300 metres would require the G3 in 7.62x51mm or the Bolt Savage .308 if I want a scope. Don't forget the .30-30 which has probably taken more deer than all other calibres combined.

243, 257,260, 270, 7-08 or 7mm. Federal Fusion's are the deer round. Haven't seen a bigger deer than this. You might want to check out a 20" .308 AR. You will be in deer territory there.

or a nice M1a scout will get the job done. ammo is easier to find also

Hi Troylaplate, I'm in Farmlife, NC or Martin county. Yeah in the boon docks I guess you could say. We due cook some mean BBQ though, and we brew the world's finest sweet iced tea. After a tough day on the farm, you learn to appreciate that.

Back on topic, Has anyone heard about the new Bushmaster caliber? The new 45 caliber Bushmaster. bushmaster claims that it will be the world's first large bored assualt rifle. What do yawll think of that? I think that I will definitly give that a look. Also, Bushmaster just rescently began producing the 6.8mm uppers to refit your old 223 cal M4. Has anybody here ever used the 6.8mm or experienced it at all? Please write in if you have. Do yawll think that the 6.8mm is a capable deer round? I'd be willing to think so, heck it's nothing but a slimmed up 270 for all intents and purposes. Anyway, write in yawlls response to this, thanks to all who have posted and please do know that I appreciate all of yawlls views on this topic, and hope to hear more. Thanks!

Nothing wrong with using an AR-15 for deer hunting...

... as long as it's chambered for 6.5mm Grendel, 6.8 SPC, 300 Whisper/Fireball, and other such rounds. Olympic even makes uppers in 243 WSSM, which is similar ballisticaly to the 243 Win.

Right on! Can't believe I forgot that one. There's also the 458 SOCOM, which has more power than the old fashioned 45-70 loads.

I have a rock river arms LAR15 carbine I carry in my truck I have shot coyotes, hogs, deer and taken them with clean shots and didnt lose a one, same for my .22-250, just make the shot count.

I drive through Martin County every so often. Actually more so now that the company I work for has purchased another company in Elizabeth City. I travel through Williamston and Windsor on my way there and back.

There's a whole lot of open land down east. It seems quiet. This area is growing up and is becoming more and more of a suburb for the Raleigh area.

It's sad but true. We are growing up as are a lot of smaller areas in the world. Anybody here from Catawba County NC? More particular Maiden? If anyone has and knew it 25 years a go and havent been back untill now, would not recognize it. That place used to be cow pastures and mills, and now industry and houses have all but stripped the community of all but all of its farming economy. I ernestly hope that will never happen to me, or to anyone else's town out there who is farming and working blue collar to survive in this highly techno world. Here's to keeping it country!

BTW, Nice talking to you Troy, hope to hear more.

I would say, take it in the field, try it out. Carry a large caliber handgun with you so that you can put the deer out of its misery if it doesn't work.

I see no problem with it if it works, but you need a backup plan if it doesn't.

As far as the 2-30 round mags...well actually most of the AR15 models come with only a 5-round mag when you buy them.

I have to agree with USMC...if you shoot right, it doesn't matter what you are using. Have you ever seen "Kiss of the Dragon" ?? Even a needle can take you out if placed correctly. That movie was based upon true techniques which have been proven throughout the centuries.

...It is all in the form. Plain and simple.

A great scope is in order, and skill is the key here. The 77 gr Sierra would be my choice, as well as some good hand loads to make sure it drops. Still the DPMS .308 would my best choice. 20-24" barrel too. Happy hunting.

remington makes "managed recoil" ammo recoil is cut 50% and the ballistics are the same up to 200yards as their regular ammo, i have used it and it is great for sighting in your rifle, when you are in the field hunting, you hardly ever notice the recoil anyway.

The 6.8 Rem SPC is a excellent light-medium game cartridge. Basically it's a 270 bullet in a .223 case on steroids. You get 30% less recoil than a .243 and 73% more energy at 500 meters than your .223. I'm planning to getting myself a M4A3 in this caliber.
