surplus ammo

Read some on ammo in 5.56/.223. Is there any surplus ammo out there that has the same powder that caused the problems in the first M-16?

My guess is no, I haven't seen any. And really, even if you do find some, as long as you clean the gun after each trip to the range you should be fine. The original problem was the ball powder they used, same stuff from the 7.62x51NATO round. Add that into the fact the troops had no idea how to keep their new rifle maintained, and thats why the M16 got a bad rep at first.

No. Ball powder loaded rounds were phased out in the late 70s. all the surplus ive laid hands on in the last 10 years has all been regular extruded powder.
