Well, the basic AR design has been subject to a phenominal amount of customization. Probably your best path would be to contact custom gunsmiths who either have done modifications or know people doing this type thing. One point to keep in mind is that the AR design has been around a long time with larger caliber modifications never making a successful penetration into the marketplace. |

I have been looking at the .458 Socom as well - I have the same problem as "Beer Forever" does. Ammo is too dang expensive. Even the brass is expensive. I think I am going to have to stick with the .308 for now. It is an intriguing concept though! Rock River is now producing a .458 SOCOM AR - maybe the price of ammo will come down as production increases. |

Even reloading the rounds is pricey, but the only feasible way of justifying owning and shooting one.

I do understand something about marketing. My point is that manufacturers are careful to watch trends developing. Trend analysis is a key factor in the decision as to the probable demand necessary to justify larger production runs. The AR has been customized by many people over time and while this works in a niche market it just has never started a demand trend that would attract a major manufacturer. If someone wants to experiment with the AR design I congratulate the innovative effort. It is just that it would probably be best not to expect an acceptance by the general marketplace.

I have a Beowulf .50 upper on a Superior Arms lower. The recoil is really nothing. Ammo expensipe and hard to get. Took 8 months to get everything from AA. Love the gun. Have a AR pistol and a 16" rifle too. |

Here is my Beowulf on a Tromix lower with a RRA NM trigger. I had Tony Rumore put the Brake on it over a year ago. Got lucky since he is not taking work in till 2009 from what I hear. ![]() I am looking at the RRA SOCOM but I do not want it in a 16" barrel. Also your right Ammo is expensive and I reload 50cal and 338LM and also the 50 Beowulf along with every other caliber I own, which is putting a big dent into my shooting. I am also looking at the Bushmaster 450 which I think will have more velocity out to 200yds then the 50 Beowulf has. I also like the fact you could get the 450 with a 20" barrel. |

heard that people like the .45 Bushmaster, but I may be confusing it with the RRA 458

I would want to see what one of those would do to a bear, the .458. I think that will stop just about anything.

I know this is an old thread, but I finally got around to taking pics and shooting this .50 Beowulf... It's loud, and has a sharp kick to it. We're going to change out the A2 stock for something a little more forgiving. The Eotech is nice with this. I haven't shot for grouping or even sighted it in, but just plinking around, it does 1 shot 1/2" groups. ![]() ![]() |

I've had my eyes on the 450 Bushmaster ever since it was introduced, and hope to save up enough to buy one. The larger caliber AR option really gets my attention. It's good to read posts about others who own, and want to own, larger caliber ARs. Thanks for pics of the Beowulf, which causes me to wonder if the 450 Bushmaster is what I'll settle for in a large caliber AR...

I know I'm a little slow on this thread but I bought a 450 Bushmaster in Jan. for a hi-power deer season in Iowa (doe only). Slapped a cheap red dot on it and went hunting. I love it (16" version) short, light, and swings great on running targets. killed 3 does, a big doe on a dead run killed with on shot was dead before she slid to a stop, second dropped where she stood @ 100 yards. 3rd was a sloppy shot on my part (spined) and had to use a second. Recoil is less than my 20 ga. semi auto & with 3 5 round clips I have plenty of shells. My new favorite deer gun!!! |
