Which Rifle???

Ok, i want a good semi auto rifle to shoot at the range and use on varmints for now, possibly larger game in the future. I am not too worried about the pelts, but i know i can get ammo that wont destroy them even with a larger round. I had a 223 and got rid of it, I want a bigger caliber. I am mainly looking at 308 because ammo can be had pretty cheap. I definitely want good accuracy, and good quality. I really want and AR, but I dont know enough about many of the assault style rifles to know if another would be better or at least as good. I have been looking at AR upper and lowers in hopes of finding a 308, and also looked at FN and Cetme. I dont know alot about either FN or Cetme. I know FN is supposed to be pretty good thats about it. I know nothing at all about CETME except it looks like a knock off FN? not sure about this just what i thought from some pictures. Anyway, i will not be able to purchase any rifle at least until about may, so any help would be great! What Rifles do you guys have that are this style? what is the best option, etc. Also if there is another cailber y'all think would be better let me know that too. Thanks!

Andy

Could always look into the .450 Bushmaster or .458 SOCOM. Or maybe something like a 6.8. And .308 can be had pretty cheap? Where?

Not anymore it's not. I can remember buying 140 round South African battle packs from CTD for $25-$27 bucks. Now a 200 round battle pack costs over $100.

I've never fired any of the other three calibers, but many people are building the 6.8 AR, and a lot are starting to build the .458. Rock River Arms sells the stuff you would need for the .458. Of course C-Products is getting ready to release their 30 round 7.62x39 mags for AR's in April.

I was just looking at an AR in 7.62x39 and then looked at ammo and it is real cheap, just might be an idea. I've never shot anything in this caliber though and don't exactly know what all it is capable of, i'll have to look into it i guess.

The problem with that round is the only thing most anyone has ever used it in is an AK or SKS. Neither of them are something I'd want to have my life depend on past 300 yards(150 yards really). However I'm really interested to see what that round is capable of from an accurate platform such as the AR.

Romak III / Dragunov / PSL - These rifles are semi and shoot 7.62x54R which can be had fairly cheap and is an all round excellent round. I have looked heavily into these and they can be very good rifles if you buy the right one. They arent really Dragunovs but dealers will ad them as such. They are really based on the AK and if you know an AK then they will be instantly familiar to you. Lots of parts can interchange but not all. If you buy one from a dealer ONLY buy from IOC or Century Arms because they are the ONLY importers. One of them lists as a PSL and the other lists them as SSG-97. All the rest are imported as kits and are put together here mostly buy a shoddy company in TN. DO NOT BUY if the receiver is marked from that company or if its marked with "Dragunov". Lots of people have bought the kit version and have been very disappointed. They are also available in .308 now but I would stick with the 54R round and shoot Chec silver tips.

I thought that a 7.62 was standard in a lot of guns, and so was NATO 5.56. I know that the Steyr Scout is chambered in 7.62 and is a military standard sniper rifle. So, that round hasn't always been in just AKs and SKS, but I think no other guns are such widely produced than the AK and the AK uses mostly that round. Though you can also get an AK in 5.56, 12ga, so on and so forth.

Confusing????????????? There are lots of 7.62's around, but totally different cartridges. The 7.62 Nato is 7.62 x 51 as opposed to the E-block 7.62 x 39 used in AK's and the old E-block 7.62 x 54r.

On saying that, lots of Brits have had good success with Lee-Enfields rechambered for the 7.62 x 39 AK round.
