| 20in barrel set up Hello, so I've got an interesting dillema, perhaps someone on here can give advice. I recently purchased a RRA Tactical CAR a4, 16in barrel and collapsable stock. I've got irons and an EOtech on it, and love the light tactical setup. However, i also want to be able to shoot prone at 300+ yards, and with my current setup, although possible, is difficult. At first i thought i might just go out and buy a milsurp bolt action, but then I had an idea. Why not just buy a 20in upper, get a bipod on it, and then i can just pop off two pins and switch out the recievers, right? what if i bought Rock River Arms: Standard Upper Half and Rock River Arms: Versa-Pod Bipods would it look funny with the 20in barrel and 6point collapsable stock? If so I could also get http://http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id= 296 What do you guys think? It would run me about 650 in total. I suppose i could wait to get the bipod to see if i'm fine without it. Thoughts? Last edited by twisterx44; 03-03-2008 at 10:17 PM. |

| Firstly you shouldn't really need the bipod but if you want one, the versa pods are ok on the AR15, some of my friends have them and are happy with them. I shoot my AR15 with 20" Hbar out to 600m and hit the target, using match iron sights (not target sights) and no bipod or rests. Sure a bipod & scope will make it seem real easy for you, but I find them boring after a while and of course they're not allowed in our (British) service rifle competitions. The Ar15 with correct ammo (& in good hands) will beat almost all other service type rifles, no matter what calibre they are in. So, my advise is, get a good 20" Hbar upper with a 1 in 8 or 1 in 9 twist (if you don't fancy reloading 80 grainers), and a set of decent iron sights. Bipod & scopes can came anytime later, once you can shoot accurately without them. |

Have in mind a good pair of iron sites? Is the standard front site post good enough, or do you reccomend that be replaced as well? | |

| i have a 24" v match on top of a dpms lower, with a 6 position stock. mounted on top is a 6x32 busnell elite, it works great for me, don't buy to look cool, build to shoot well. |

| I suppose it's all down to how much you want to spend & how competitive you aim to be. My AR15 is a Fulton's Mirage, shoots way better than I do and their Mirage upper comes in at about $800 but it does have everything you may want, free floated with match sights and service competition legal. The RR one you were looking at is fine but if you want the free-floating handguard, decent sights etc. the price just goes up & up. The RR NM might be a good option @ $700 All I can really say is buy the best you can afford. BTW Front sight posts are OK. PS my next Barrel/upper will be in 6.5 Grendel. | Alright, free floating handguard it is. I don't need it to be competition legal, its a recreational rifle only. Would a 20in HBAR free float 1:9 twist be alright with the 55 grain remington or would i need heavier rounds? Also, can someone suggest a good rear site for a picatinny rail? How about the ARMS #40 here? Rock River Arms: Flip Rear Sights |

| The 1 in 9 twist should shoot OK with the 55 grainers, maybe better with 62 gn nato rounds though. I'm sure you'll get plenty of advice here! My rifle is a 1 in 8 and prefers the heavier bullets but does OK at short ranges (100-300m) with the 62 gn ss109. 75,77 & 80 gn for the 600m though. I've never used the flip sights but with the Arms reputation, I'm sure they're pretty good. I use ARMs rings on one of my .308's, and they are excellent. |
