My wife finally agreed to let me buy a m 4. Since this is the weapon both her and I qualified with in boot she said it would be fun.........

I can already see beta mags and some really dead coyotes!. any way what is the cheapest I can get into a ar platform. I shoot alot and will probably replace all of the internals eventually, but just need something in-expensive to start out with. any help is appreciated.

Get a stripped lower from a gun show, and then get a kit to go from there. RRA makes a good one, but they have a bit of a waiting period.

You can also get a lower parts kit and stock, then just but a complete upper. Your choice.

A base model M4 should be right at $800. I helped my friend pick one up from the local shop for $799 + tax and it had a Bushmaster lower with Stag Arms M4A3 upper.

If you really want a CHEAP build, do this. Buy you a good stripped lower(don't pay more then $140-$150 after shipping and transfer though). Buy a RRA, Stag, or DPMS(let you know for sure when my two DPMS lower part kits come in) lower parts kit. Then, find you a used Vietnam era stock and upper, but a LMT or CMT M16 bolt carrier group and a charging handle from Bravo Company, and any hardware for the stock you may need. Use just 55gr stuff in it for the time being. Thats about as cheap as you can get. Would be one of those things that you could pick up a more expensive stock/upper later on down the road, and then already have some parts to build a 2nd retro style AR.

I spent many hours recently for the very same reason. I wnet to a local vendor and purchased a DPMS stripped lower ($159.00 total in Alaska) and decided to buy Del-Ton, Inc. AR-15 16" Mid-Length Rifle Kit from here I have a Red Dot sight I will mount on and will be getting a buis as well. Later I may upgrade the handguard for add ons and such. I found this to be the most cost effective route.

Jaeger I bought a Bushmaster AR-15 M4 vershion new for $ 875.00 dollars at a gun shop.
Is that amount of money out of the ball park ?

If you plan on varmint hunting,I would look at the .204,.22-250 performance in a .222mag case.(like the .223 case.) sam.

Thanks fellas. AH $800 is not out of the ball park. I think I will go the route of the stripped lower and complete upper. My buddy from the Corps is a gunsmith for cabelas so I will see if he can put it together for me. As for the 22-250 or 204 I personally like the military calibers and have a stockpile of 223 from my brother in law. He bought a bush master bull pup and hated it so gave me the ammo. I think I have about 5500 rds. Thanks fellas for all of your advise.

where did you shoot m4's in boot? we dont even use m4's in boot. i was one of 4 in the plattoon that even got an m4. and thats in the fleet

Yugo I meant a 16 in boot. When I got to the fleet I was issued a M4 (and qualified with it), M40A3, and a sig 226 .40. We had about 6 guys in STA from 1/6.

Well I got one. $699 DMPS panther lite 16". Took my wife to the range today and she loved it. She wants one now but with a A2 stock and flat top/eotech set up. Did I mention I love my wife very much. I got the rifle from....Atlantic firearms - AR15 & AK47 rifles - Olympic arms at wholesale prices.

Go Stag Arms and forget about the Beta mags, they aren't reliable nor practical. Too heavy.

Jaeger, you're one lucky devil with that wife of yours... I love my DPMS, but probably no more than I would love a Bushmaster, Armalite, etc. I've fired most if not all of the mainstream ARs, and unless I nitpick, there's no difference to me. Congrats on your new toy!

Buy some CAA mag couplers or something of the like, and you'll have a really nice alternative to the Beta mag. 6 of my 8 mags are coupled, and I love it on the range.
