The remington 30cal is overrated in my opinion. Olympic has a new 30cal super short mag that beats 30-06 velocities, but while those calibers are great for hunting, they'd suck from a defense standpoint. The 6.8 will be great for hunting, and also serve as one heck of a defense gun...

I think I am sticking with the 6.8. I will keep looking and asking questions. He doesn't need it right away so I am going to do a lot of research and take my time so I buy smart.

Someone on arfcom just fondled one. Not quite what he expected. The mag well is bigger than standard, Remington had to beef up the BCG so it's not spec either. I was seriously considering getting an upper in that but if the mags (which are really weird) won't fit in a standard AR lower, it's not going to work.

Ok, What about these? Anyone ever heard of Stag Arms? How do they compare in quality to others? are the finishes pretty good on these?

Stag Arms

What else would I need, other than magazines? The lower says it comes with a parts kit installed. Would I need any tools to assemble the buttstock to the lower and the lower to the upper? Would I need to ask a gunsmith to order the lower for me or what is the process that you usually do for that?

Stag makes really good stuff...

You can install the stock without any special tools. The lower will have to go through a FFL holder... Some pawn shops do it, most gunsmiths will, and gun stores do. You need to get a copy of their FFL and send it to Stag when you place your order.

Ok, sounds like a plan.

Hmm... Well, I am back at debating the 6.8 cartridge. I know it is superior to the .223 but I am worried about availability, especially in the case of something like a hurricane. Of course, I guess I could just tell my grandpa the importance of "stockpiling" and that would solve the issue right?

The ammo can be ordered online pretty easily. Face to face availability is not good for it. Silver State Armory almost always has at least 4 different loads for it in stock.

All it means is you need to tell him to keep a minimum amount on hand, and reorder as he depletes that stock.

Ok. Well I am waiting on the funds from him now so I will let you know how it turns out. This Stag rifle seems like the one! I am pretty happy that I can get the lower stamped with a 6.8 on it so he doesn't get confused and buy .223 on accident.

Recommend DPMS/Remington since the same company owns both and DPMS makes the Remington R-25. DPMS gives you more options though. Unless you are just sold on a .243 (20" barrel only that I know of), I'd recommend the DPMS Sportical in .308 with 16" barrel. Complete rifle < $1,000 and you can pick up a new Nikon Monarch 3x12x42 scope off Ebay for less than $350. I've got 2 in .308 (16" and 24" heavy barrel) and 2 in .243 (1-DPMS and 1-Rem R-25 both with 20" barrel) and the mags are interchangeable. Just a thought. By the way, I lived in Biloxi for four years getting there about a week before Camille. Don't know where you're going to get a 300 yard shot in that country unless you are hunting the delta or up north.
