Adding to SnS said, cap, I have a suggestion for you, delivered second-hand from a buddy who put in a year in the Sandbox.

Get yourself a pint bottle of Gunzilla and use that to clean your rifle instead of the issue CLP. According to a salty Marine gunnery sergeant, it's the only stuff he's ever found that will get an M-16 to perform the way Colt claims it does, and really doesn't, out in the field where you'll be. I'd suggest getting a .223 boresnake, too.

Captianflip. Regardless what kind of mount you use on your gun.. Choose a Aimpoint with 2 MOA dot in that case you can take pretty long shots.

Ive use them on a H&K G3 on my trip to Yugoslavia in the mid 90. (in the swedish army). not just becuse they are made in sweden, they are really good red dot sights.. SALUTE...

H&K G3 service rifles, with or without Aimpoints, would be excellent rifles for duty in Afghanistan. Modified M-14 service rifles are already being pressed back into service now, I wish there were enough of them.

Just Say No to plastic rails. Get a set of rails from YHM, they're aluminum and they cost the same as those plastic ones. They're US made, and they're quality. The VFG you picked is fine. You can mount the LED to the rail, so ditch the third thing. Yes, go with the PMAGS. Get 6, you'll probably lose some. The rest of the stuff is fine. Good luck!

Nasty situation you are headed into...convoys have their fair share of danger in Afghanistan.

I'd see if you could scare up an old M-60 or a new M-240 for whoever's riding shotgun with ya

Kind of a shame they don't give you guys MP-5's or something more useful for the trucks.

If you can swing it, get a M-9A1 pistol in a low-leg (tactical) holster like the base fuzz use...that way you can still shift & draw while sitting without too much fuss

Should be able to get issued one from the Armoury, if you sweet talk the Armourer just right

Something like any of the below.

I would think a can of Hornady's One Shot Dry Lube would also work over there in either of the sandboxes? Like it says, it's a dry lube and lubricates without leaving a wet residue for something to stick to.

I have heard it's suppose to also work great on Ruger 10/22's. We all know how dirty .22lrs can be and get your gun. It'll still get dirty and need to be cleaned, just not as quick...

you dont need to worry about it inside the truck...there's nothing you can do inside anyways. you can't open the windows. the only reason you could ever use your rifle inside the truck is in a 7 ton out the gun ports. you get blown up, you get out and react. just watch for ied's and set up security fast if you hit them so the enemy thinks twice about a follow on attack. and you'll have your medium and heavy gun's up top in the turrets. as much as everyone wants to get "salty" and get in the firefight of there life, it's not worth it. and the better your gear is, the more effective you are, the quicker its over, and hopefully no one but the enemy dies. pistols are pointless over there, i mean it's better to have it and not need it but i didnt bring mine out. the get caught on everything when your trying to get out the truck. your m16 will be fine as it is man, i would get the a2 mount with a nice optic. that's all you'll need. the foregrip you can do without.

I suggest the Z mount of some kind. Rails add weight, something to think about. Also mounting optics on a drop in 4 rail forearm isn't going to work well to hold zero. If you had a free float forerail you could do it but I doubt that will be alowed as major modification would be required.

As stated above... Please do not put those plastic quad rail handguards on your duty gun... I wouldn't even put those on a 22lr ar for plinking. Everything else looks ok. I think there are better grips and light mounts out there, but those will work...
At the very minimum get a YHM quad rail. They're not that expensive. If you want something nicer, get a larue or daniel defense, or even troy. They're quite a bit more expensive, but much lighter, and hold their resale value very well.

What he said, I stay away from CAA products for serious stuff and thats what you will be doing.

As someone else said, you can mount your light directly to the handguard with your rail system. No need to mount it to the front sight post.

I use LaRue Tactical mounts for all my lights and optics, they use quick detach levers and they lock on solid and real tight with no movement.

They make a vertical foregrip that comes on and off super easy with the use of their throw lever but only if you want it too.

When its on, it feels like its a permanent part of your rail system. A lot tighter than the one made by Tango Down.

LaRue Tactical, DD,and Troy are all excellent but I think that all the rail systems that LT make require you to take off your delta ring (someone correct me if Im wrong) which means its a bit more complicated than simply popping off your standard 2 piece handguards and snapping on your new ones.

DD makes an Omega rail system that's a free float system but doesnt require you to remove the delta ring but its a bit more pricy at $339.00 for a full length rifle size. Daniel Defense, Inc | Browse | Omega Rail | Omega Rail 12.0 (Rifle)

I know thats expensive but when it comes to AR/M16 parts you often times get what you pay for. Its very light weight compared to other rail systems and it locks on rock solid which would be a plus if you are mounting optics on it. Weight can be a big factor depending on how far/long/much you are carrying it, especially when you start to add stuff to it. As your going to be a driver it might not be that much of a deal.

I have an Omega rail for my carbine and i cant say enough about it.
