Thinking about another build (sorta)

I'm tempted to build another AR, mostly because I have a stripped lower that's lonely.

My club has high power shoots once a month and I'm thinking about grabbing a Model 1 Sales OMCP kit Model 1 Sales


The club's CMP shoots are a blast, and I've been told the High Power shoots are similar, but even more laid back.

I'm saving up overtime money, and I don't know the current shipping delay time on their kits. My last one was almost 6 months to the day, though.. With the way prices have been dropping, I'm guessing that Model 1 might also be getting close to being caught up??

Anyway, it comes with National Match front and rear sights. It's pretty much a standard rifle, so worst case scenario, if I don't like it I can alway sell it..

Anyone else out there in AR15 land shoot one of these OMCP rifles? My only real decision is whether to stay with the standard barrel or pony up the extra $50 for the stainless. The stainless would be a heavier barrel, which could hurt, or help shooting scores..

I started out thinking ss was the only way to go, but now I've done a 180. I think the chrome-moly are possibly more accurate (can't really tell a difference). Chrome lined also doesn't seem to do anything for me. It may last longer - but in the civilian world it will take about 27 years to wear out a barrel)

I completely agree! Other than occasional play shooting, the rifle's going to be used for practice and a once a month 50 round competition. Stainless is allowed, but it's not "correct" for the rifle. Unless I have a shoot in the rain, there's little chance of the rifle ever being used in a less than sanitary situation.

If I do buy one, I'm leaning towards the Chrome-moly barrel for another reason, too.. I'd be shooting 55grain fmj rounds and the slightly slower twist would be in my favor (a little).

I'll be calling them on Monday to find out what the current wait time is on orders. My fingers are crossed that they say something in the line of 3-4 months.. It would give me a better chance of gathering the needed overtime money before the card got hit.

My Model 1 was a 6.8SPC - it took a little longer than the 12 weeks they quoated me, but not that much longer. I would say their estimates are pretty close.

The krieger barrel will run circles around the er shaw barrels...

That being said, if you can't afford it, go with whichever one of the other two you like better... Won't be much difference in accuracy either way.

Edit... Holy crap... LOL... just saw the price diff on that barrel.

I honestly think you'll get better accuracy out of a cmmg or bravo company 20" upper. Check them out before you commit.

Why not save for a little longer and get a match upper from Fulton's? Then you know any accuracy issues are you and not the rifle! I would go for at least the 1 in 8 twist, if you don't like the shiny stainless barrel there's always paint.

$1200 for the upper?? Yikes!!
I'm sure it's a great unit, but our matches are at 100 yards with reduced targets..

Because I have too many pasttimes, I can't (or won't) play with that sort of cash on something that I'm not sure I'll even use that much.. If it were my main expensive pasttime, I could see it, but not in my case..

Now I'm going to go toss my .22 pistol in the rear trunk of my Goldwing and see if I can go get some squirrels for supper.

Well, I called M1S and was told the current wait is 20 weeks.. Works perfectly for me!!
Order placed today for one of the 20" OCMP rifles.. And I spent the extra $50 for a stainless barrel..

And I did it for only one reason.. I like the way they look.. 1-8 twist for heavier bullets was also part of the reason, but mostly it's because I like the way they look..

I guess I was just in the stainless mood? That, and both of my other AR's have stainless barrels and I don't want to have arguments starting in my gun safe on who's prettier..

Will do, but it won't be till late April, early May..

I've been very happy with my other 2 M1S kits. A 16" CAR and a 20" Varmint..

That's as good as any reason to me!

I do like your choice of the 1-8 twist - if this is going to be a match rifle you will be using heavier match bullets. I think the twist rate is often overlooked with the AR.

now i've never really shot competition but i will say this. when i shot at the 200 yd line standing for qualification with my m4, i did much better than i did with my m16. now im not saying get an m4 i'm saying that the extra weight of the m16 made it harder for me. just my 2 cents
