AR 15 7.62x39 Long Range?

Is the 7.62x39 a good long range rifle when used with a 20" barrel?

Whats your definition of long range? If its 100 yards then yes, if its 400-500 yards then no. A .308 AR would be good for long range though.

It's good for 200 yds but drops off after that.

i don't think so. it was bulit as an intermediate round between the sub-gun and the rifle.

I have a chinese long barrel AK that was sold in the early 1990's as a sporter rifle. Once converted to what an AK is supposed to be, it is highly accurate with the 7.62x39 round. I think the barrel is either 19" or 20", and with the receiver mounted scope, it is accurate past 500 yds. I think this round is a bit stupid for an AR, as it is not the best round out there. If you feel the need to get a commie round upper for your AR, you should pick up the AK74 round aka 5.45x39. It is a better round than the 55grain 5.56x45, IMO, and the ammo can still be found and is inexpensive.

Otherwise, if you have the AR and feel the need to reach out and touch someone, then try one of the newer rounds out there, like the 30 Remington AR round or the 300 AAC blackout.

The trajectory of the 7.62x39 is roughly similar to that of a .30-30, so that should give you an idea of effective ranges.

It is a good deer round for 200 yds and closer. Anything beyond and I would not chance it. The round can be accurate enough at distances, if you have a longer barrel, but the problem is the round loses energy fast... not to mention you need to know your firearm very well, as the bullet drop is substantial at distances beyond 400 yds.
