In the 60s Mattel made M16 toys and they were really popular, but it is only an urban legend that they made the guns that people used in rugged war, in the dense jungles, and thick mud. You really think that a toy company would want to make guns for the army and the army would want a toy company to make rifles for them for combat use?
Here is your Mattel M16
By modern standards it isn't all that realistic for a toy replica, but back then it was close enough to start all those rumors.

Reason: Automerged Doublepost
You all must have been watching the same history channell special as I was a couple of hours ago on Eugene Stoner's brain child. No matter how many times I hear it, I just can't fathom the issuing of a rifle with instructions that it needs no cleaning.
Even the AK needs the special ocasion cleaning.
What I can't believe was how much of a pissing contest it was between the military and the government, which left poor Stoner and Colt caught in the middle. It is ashamed how many lives it cost before some people got their head out of their arases and did what had to be done to correct the problems.

It was mostly the "Wiz kids" who were responsible. They loved gadgets for the military, yet had little experience in small arms and they were in charge for one reason or another.
Common sense comes first. For some reason the government always needs to learn lessons more than once. It was already determined that chrome lined barrells had a lot of advantages in a battle rifle, but nooooo. They needed a whole lot of soldiers and marines to die in order to utilize the old knowledge in the new rifle.
See where math gets you in the real world, dead. Let that be a lesson to you kids, you need no math passed algebra.
Math isn't the problem. It's knowing what the heck it means that matters, and knowing that you don't know everything, so taking the time amd making the effort to prove your designs in actual use.
