Definitely can't do wrong with the Silvbertips, it is probably the 30 cal bullet that has killed more deer than all others.

Well, I don't have either anymore.....I have scaled down a little bit in the name of keeping my family afloat. However, my favorite deer gun is just my good old Win 94 30-30. 170gr soft point. Great gun for Texas white-tail hunting. I like the mid-light gr in .308 though.

in both my 06's and my 762x54's i prefer the 200 grain bullets. they dont shoot as flat but they give more consistant groups at distance and a harder thump when they smack the deer. im thinking about getting some 240 grains in 308 and tryin them!

&.62x54;x39, 8mm, 6.5x55, .357, 9mm, whatever I have on hand when the sob is on my job is what I will use. I left my pistol at home one day after the first week of either sex season and drove up on 4 does. Would have goten atleast 2 of them if I had the .357 on me.

Here in Indiana the bullet we use for deer has to come out of a shotgun, or a muzzle loader.

Thumbs up

I'm stocked with plenty of all three of the original choices, but I prefer 150 grain Remington core-lokt since I'm only usually shooting at deer from 100 yds or less.

165 and 180 grain loads wouldn't offer any advantages that I'm aware of. I used a Springfield 1903-A3, .30 Cal last season, and a Rem. 700 BDL in .30 cal. this season. In both I used 150 grain loads.

Question

Hulk...Does that cause much(or any) blowout to the deer's body?

Just wondering because I've got some 180 grain, too, but I left them behind in favor of the 150 for my 30-06.

Not really much more that a 150 from what I've observed.

The reason why I chose the 180 over the 150 is because where I hunt it's very thick and I like the heavier bullet.

I shot my deer this year with a 150 power point. He was 15yds away facing me. When I was dressing him out the bullet was found against his pelvis. It broke his neck going in and still penetrated all the way to the pelvis. You don't need more penetration than that in my humble opinion, at least for Missouri whitetails.

150gr winchester silvertips for me

Haven't actually shot a whitetail with one yet, but they shoot very well from my 06 for factory loads. Only been hunting rifle country in MI for the last couple years. All prior and around home is 12ga country.

I'm wondering, at 300 RUM velocities, will a 150gr bullet lose significant enough velocity due to drag that a 180gr is actually flatter shooting?

That's what I have and intend to use for whitetail whenever I get around to doing it... That is, unless my Mosin grows enough on me.

I prefer a 165gr Sierra GameKing, boat tail, softpoint.

In the 308 dia. this weight and shape gives the best combination of velocity, speed retention, down range energy, penetration, expansion, and weight retention.

If I want a heavier bullet then I would go to a larger caliber.
