Hello, I resently took up firearms as one of my sports. So my knowlege on this is very bleek. I had stoped going in the bush by myself due to a scare with bear encounters. So I picked up 30-06 with 180 gr bullets to take with me just in case. Is that cal of firearm good enough to take care of a Brown Bear if ever I had to protect myself? I just want to feel more comfortable while being in the bush with my boy.

30-06 is capable of bringing down any animal on the North American continent. That said.... A charging and/or enraged Brown Bear sow will be very hard to stop... If you're going to be in an area that this may be likely I recommend 375 Holland&Holland

If you only want one for defense, consider something short range, a slow and heavy round such as 45-70 or 450 Marlin. Though I'm not an expert and have many of the same questions you do, a 12ga shotgun filled with slugs may be a better idea. Though I tend to prefer rifled slugs since I prefer a smoothbore, I think a 12ga pump with a rifled barrel and 3" sabot slugs would do a good job.
