I have hunted them with a 308 and had no problem taking one down with a single shot behind the ear

Here in MO we bait them in. My guns of choice are a Marlin 1895G "guide gun" in 45-70. I use a 420gr cast bullet at about 1300 fps. I also usually pack my ruger blackhawk chambered in .41 mag, shooting 210 xtp's at 1250 fps or 200 gr hard cast at the same velocity.

Do ya'lllll know the 308 and the 243 are basically the same thing.............
Only difference is the 308 can shoot a bit bigger lead.....
but at a slower speed.........
I have shot 200+ pound size bucks with both calibers.......
No difference in bullet entry and damage with aprx. 100 grain size lead.
It is all about bullet placement....Not the size of what you shoot........
Practice shooting so you can hit your target........
Maybe some of you need a 50 cal...
I only need a 243........

100 grain
100 grain partition would work on pigs out of 243 with good bullet placement

So when's the last time you shot a 400+ lb. hog with your .243? Several years ago, my buddy shot a boar at around 80 yds with his .270. We were in pretty rough scrub so he shot him in the shoulder to anchor him. The shot busted his left shoulder and liquefied one lung. He still managed to cover over 50 yds and got to within 75 ft of us before going down. He was still trying to get up and get to us when my buddy shot him in the head from about 10 ft. Hog hunting in the southern states is not an endeavor to undertake with too much confidence and too little gun.

I disagree with earltash about the .243 and .308 being the same thing. The .243 may have a faster bullet but the .308 carries much more energy. And the .308 can take almost double the bullet weight of a .243.

That......just......seems..........pretty strange......to.........me.

I shot a 200lb'r last December with a 55gr. .243 super short. Dropped like a rock. 'Course I wasnt figuring on that hog being there while I was looking for white tail, otherwise I would have brought more gun.

If and when I go looking for pigs, I'll be wanting some weight in the bullet. I don't think velocity totally makes up for size.

A friend of mine who was hired to clean some pigs out of a creekbed area told me stories that curled my hair, about how they take a lickin' and keep on tickin'--right at you.

Anywhere there's pigs out here there's trees, A.H. In Southern California they like to hang out along the creeks and rivers. They mostly hole up during the day, and raise heck with farmer's crops at night. The ones my friend went after were destroying a golf course.

troy2000 How much sleep did you get last night ???? LMAO ! My last post was at
12:34 am and i got up this morning at 4:45 !
I guess as we do get older we require less sleep...I think I'll go get in my recliner and doze off. But first I'm going to McDonalds for a pig & bisquit.

And I was up about three o'clock the morning before...I normally don't have trouble sleeping, and I think I figured out the problem.

I've been taking Claritin D 24-hour tabs for allergy problems lately, and the other day I bought some drug store's generic brand instead. Both pills have pseudo-ephedrine in them. But the generic ones have more, or they're releasing it at a different rate, or something. So I guess I've been a semi-wired speed freak for a couple of days now, and I'm not really enjoying it.

Hopefully it'll be out of my system by the end of the day, so I can get a decent night's sleep.
