I used to use a 7.62x39 but found the 7.62x54r to be much better. Personally I am getting a larger caliber gun for my own hog hunting. My own personal experience has lead me to rely on smaller faster calibers for hunting deer and predators but when it comes to game like hogs I feel much more comfortable carrying a bigger stick. I agree completely that hogs can be taken with smaller calibers like 243 etc but only when you have a good steady shot and you can rest assured in your ability to place the bullet where it needs to be to drop the hog. My experience with hunting hogs though has placed me in positions where I needed to make quick shots on hogs that are fleeing or charging. Also given the fact that we routinely see hogs in the 300-400 lbs range I feel much better with a large caliber. There was a boar taken a few months ago about 10 miles from where I live that checked in over 800 lbs but of course most grown boars usually weigh around 250 - 300 lbs. The hogs here also tend to stay in brushy and densely forested creek bottoms coming out into fields only at night so we are by necessity put into close quarters when pursuing them.

I might also add that hunting hogs around here is as much about attempting to control the exploding population and ensuing property destruction as putting food on the table. I dont just kill and leave them laying like some do but I do try to kill as many as possible so I also like automatic rifles or levers over bolt actions. To that end I am considering a 450 bushmaster. I want to see some results from one first but nobody I know has one. My other option is to get something in a 45-70 lever but I am still searching.

i do a lot of hog hunting and have killed them with every thing frome 223 to 4570 the most sucessful way is to hunt them with good hog dogs then my fave is a 12ga slug it will drop the biggest hogs and won't go through on the bigger hogs witch keeps the dogs safe,
if your looking to just pick one off i wouldn't use a 243 unless you are a good shot. remember their vitals are a little low aim just behind the elbow if you do use a 243 get a 100grn nostiler partion or something simular if you want to hunt dogs e-mail mallardexpress@live.com
