Semi-auto short range Griz defense

Yup, another griz gun thread.

Which would you guys take if in free Alaska? This is for short range defensive backup only, not for long range hunting. This is to put down a charging griz as fast as possible.

I was born and raised in Alaska..I've been very close to very big grizzlies..I would want a shotgun with handloads..dental floss with split shot crimped on it

12 ga pump, extended tube with alternating slugs (Breneke would be a good choice for deep penetration) and 00 Buck. 3" Chambered, but would probably load 2 3/4" fodder.

18.5~20" barrel. Synthetic stock (model 870, my personal pref.) Steel would be ROGUARD inside and out http://www.robarguns.com/DesktopDefa...d=4&tabindex=2

Fiber optic front bead as encounters may more likely be at dusk or dawn.

A sling that comes off the shoulder easily would be handy too. Iv'e seen plenty of guys fishing with this rig when I visited Fairbanks.

Well whadaya know, Brenneke slugs are my favorite round out of my Moss 590. Might pick up an 870 ESM some day to use 3.5" rounds, that or an auto.

I'm thinkin a Saiga-12 with a customized rifled barrel firing Dixie slugs would combine the firepower of a semi-auto with the reliability of a pump in a compact and versatile package.

I voted Saiga because it's affordable. Otherwise I'd go for the BAR.

NO SEMI-AUTOS!!!!!!!!!! They can malfunction too much Pump action shotgun in 10g with handloaded single-o buck shot. only shoot them in the head! Almost sure to kill them!

No Griz in my neck of the woods and the biggest bear I've seen is a ol' blackie boar which is only 1/3 the size of a Griz .
I'm surprised at how many choose sluggers instead of rifles !

you ready for amazement?

my #1 choice would be any of these: m1a in .308 ruger mini thirty, akm. possibly leaning toward the mini 30 with 125 grain pointed soft points alternated with that cheap wolf Hollow Point stuff.

I make these choices because you mentioned semi-auto, and possible follow up. These aren't "one shot stopper" rounds for griz or polar bears, BUT the recoil is light, the accuracy is there, and 3 rounds would definitely stop one.

Remember with non game animals you don't care about meat. Also, in life or death you dont general think about trohpies... you're not looking for a heart and lung cavity shot, you want a nervous system shot (head).

If I was Surprised by a 1500 pound bear within charging distance, I could pump 3 or 4 round into his head and neck.

If I must chose a big caliber to play, I will go with .50 bmg

uuuhhhm I've seen shot fail on leopard before. In this video: http://www.streamload.com/thetroll/E...HFWGU/lion.wmv

Everything they had, failed.Gimme Slugs and lots of em. If it is in Griz country - I'd take HE rounds if available, thank you.
Some shotgun shots on leopard and lion will not penetrate the skull at all....most likely on a bear, you would just make it more angry...
