| Camoflauge (didn't know where this should go)
Quick question: I'm preparing to go on my first hunting trip in the near future. I always watch the hunting series on OLN and I noticed all the hunters wear 'Real Tree' styled camoflauge. Does this have anything to do with animals vision abilities, or is it just a style? The reason I'm asking is because I have authentic USMC Digital Camo BDU's (not knock off's, the real deal) and I was wondering if they would be just as effective? or do I need to get some real tree? Thanks, -Shawn :full: |

Camo Is available in all sorts of patterns ! The Big question is Will it match the surroundings you are hunting in ??? It is almost an Art form to be able to blend with the brush and not be seen ! You can actually destroy the Camouflage characteristics by washing them in the wrong detergent , since some game animals like deer and Moose can see in different spectrums, some detergents make you stand out like a neon light to them ! Colors , patterns, can mean a big difference as can your SCENT ! So I guess you need to do some research as to the Surroundings you will be hunting in ! Rich

while i am user of camoflage where allowed, a lack of movement is much more important.

RealTree is simply a company spending more on advertising, and making good deals with stores to get their product out there. I do like it though, as it works well down here. Better than milsurp Woodland Camo. In other places, Treebark or something else would work better. Truly though, scent and movement are picked up on by most critters more than coloration. I used to easily hunt squirrels wearing jeans and a plaid shirt. BUT, I stayed downwind and QUIET, kept movements SLOW. Camo is just another tactic among many. I didn't like the digital camo at first, but the more I see it, especialy in the field, the more I appreciate it. It seems to work fairly well here in our more open woods.

Here is a pic of some of my buddys in the days before high tech camo. Note the ducks. Daily carnage was a common occurance:cheer:

While camoflauge can be important it is more important to be quiet and still in order to let your prey get closer to you so you have a better chance of a clean shot. Remember man has been successfully hunting for thousands of years with out the use of high tech camo patterns.

ive always got a kick out of such things... i tend to have better luck when the animal KNOWS im there because it thinks its safe since it has an eye on me or can hear me rather well. depends on the situation of course, if your trying to bring in geese or ducks it probably isnt the best while they are trying to land but a lot of time it doesnt hurt to make a bit of noise when your walking up.. just make sure you stop if they think your getting too close (and you can tell)

Make a ghille suit...... Realtree is so in and trendy right now, all the real weekend warrior hunters wear it all over town on a daily basis...... Yes it is good camo, but IMHO being still, playing the wind and not farting loudly matter more than camo patterns.that and knowing where to set up to hunt. If you need Realtree to hunt, can someone explain how a bunch of sots in blaze orange from head to toe can shoot deer every year?

The last deer I shot never saw me and I was 30 yards away, in relative open cover. Any human would have seen me in a New York minute.....but not that deer. Blaze orange camo is legal here and I wear it. I did not move, 'cept to pull the trigger.....she never saw me. I do have to work on the stupid deer walking up behind me where I am open of the cover....or turn around when I hunt.........
