1st time hunter

So I will hopefully be hunting this fall for my first time, I live in Ohio but I hear that rifle hunting is outlawed and is restricted to bow and shotgun. I was looking for some experienced advice as to where a good area would be for whitetail deer hunting. I will be going with my father who is 54, but I am only 17, it will also be his firsttime so I would guess that we would need to take some hunter safety courses. Although its going to be our first time hunting we shoot often so we aren't idiots when it comes to simple gun safety and knowledge. Any help could be great, the guns we have available to use are a Marlin 336 .30-30, a 12 gauage pump shotgun, .50 cal black powder rifle, and not sure if many people do but an SKS (probably not this one), anyway I have wanted to hunt for the past few years and finally I am doing well enough in school so my dad said we could look into it. I know many people start hunting as little kids but my dad was never really into it so i guess Better late than never, any information will be greatly appreciated, areas, time of seasons, gear, costs, etc. Thanks in advance

ur might have to wait till next year cause safety courses are already over and u cant get a license without them

What do you need a safety course for if you can only use a pea shooter?

It sounds as if you have the shooting part down, but what are you going to do if you shoot a deer? If you have never field dressed a deer, buy the November issue of Outdoor Life. It has a good article about easy field dressing. It's not hard, but needs to be done right. And buy a GOOD knife and hatchet or saw.

Do you know what it takes to legally hunt a deer in your state? You might want to give the local wildlife department a call.

I don't know what area in Ohio your from,but I live right across the river from Meigs county,and they kill some nice bucks.They don't allow you to use High Power rifles,because of Ohio having such flat ground,but the locals DO use them.The electric company owns a lot of land in Ohio,I don't know their policy on hunting,but It wouldn't hurt to check.Theres a free magazine on hunting and fishing in Ohio that a lot of the gas stations,and places that sell bait and tackle have up around the counter.You may want to check it out.....Good Luck

The American Electric Company Issues hunting permits,and so doesthe Mead paper company...Just Gooogle Ohio's Wildlife area maps.

Check with the Ohio Division of Wildlife at this link Ohio Division of Wildlife There you'll be able to find all the rules and regs. Public hunting area maps. Hunter's Education classes. Everything you need to hunt SAFELY and LEGALLY in your state.

Texas has a ($$)one year deferment. Ask if Ohio has that option.

As a dad, a high spot in my life was my youngest son's first hunt. He took hunter ed at boy scout camp. (he's an Eagle Scout currently serving at Fort Anaconda, Balad Iraq as an armament dawg for the Apache's) Got drawn for Texas Parks and Wildlife hunt. He was 14 then. Let him take my F-250 5 spd up an ungodly steep hill by himself to his assigned blind. At the end of the day he drove down that mountain side and had a doe in back that he had to track and fielddress by himself for the first time.
He almost barfed a few years earlier when I clean a rabbit!
Made a dad proud.
(age 15, was a different story. I was ready to kick him out)

It's a dad thing!
