Thoughts and opinions on a new rifle

After alot of thought i have narowed my choice down to a Sako 85 in 7mm-08 or the shop down the road has a Model 70 classic featherweight in .308 for half the price of the sako.

just wondering if i can get your thoughts and opinions, it might help me make up my mind which way i might go.

as a side note i already own a model 70 in 375 H&H

Thanks in advance for your help, Nathan

Both fine rifles, but the featherweight might kick a little.

The Sako is a fine rifle,But I personally would choose the Winchester. I am a Winchester Fan and User ...And .308 ammo is more plentiful and cheaper.
Wins are going up in value so they are a fine choice to gather while you can.

Winchester Model 70. My dad owns one in .300 Weatherby, and it has never jammed, and always hit's where he aims. I ain't seen a deer get away yet.

Wait for a bit Nathan123, I hear that Sako is bringing out a Finnlight in the 85 model, now that would be a sweet thing in 7mm08 or even 6.5X55.

both calibers are good. i would go with the winchester. the featherweights are fairly well stocked, and dont kick much.

Im still about a month or 2 away from buying it, im looking at the 85 Hunter (blued) although the Finnlight would be nice im not a big fan of stainless and synthetic stocks. I just read a review by Breil Jackson in Guns and Game magazine (april - june issue) and it writes up very well. Sako are claiming 5 shots under an inch at 100yd, and after working up a few handloads, the test rifle was in 30-06, the smallest group was .82" for 5 shots, and 3 shots at .56" also Nick Harvey did a test a while back and it wrote up well.

I actually wanted a 7mm-08, i was just willing to compromise for the model 70 in .308 because i know what a top rifle they are, But at this stage i will probably go with the Sako.

You can have the Sako and an okay scope, or the Winchester and a great scope, not to mention some ammo.

To me the cost of 7mm-08 ammo being 25.00 to 42.00 a box would limit my target practice, whereas .308 is plentiful and cheaper and better energy to the target /game animal for all practical purposes...My 2 cents.

Not too many bears over here mate.

It will be mainly used for pigs, goats and a few dingoes. 7mm-08 will do the job on anything i want to shoot at over here, except buffalo and scrub bull but i have a Model 70 in 375 H&H in the safe for them.
Im not too worried about the price of ammo, i will be reloading for it.

I would go with the 308 because of the caliber not the weapon.
