Building a new rig

hey you guys! i was gonna build a new bolt rifle system and was wanting to get your thoughts. I'm thinking about maybe going with a Remington Model 710 in 30-06. If I can find custom stocks and a bull barrel, I'll switch those. Also need some good glass. I have a Simmons 8 point scope (3x9x40) and at 100 yards, I can barely make my target. Any help you guys can give will be greatly appriciated!

The 710 isn't a very good rifle, it has cheap internal components, and overall, is a poorly built firearm. You may want to look into the Remington 700 for your desired rifle, as it has many more upgrades, and is a better rifle then the 710.

Not knowing much about Simmons scopes I,m not sure but your vision problem may be because the scope needs adjusted for clarity. On the back of the scope is a bell with a lock ring just ahead of it.Hold the bell and loosen the lock ring and turn it forward quite a bit, then looking through the scope, turn the bell both in and out until you find a place it is clear. Then tighten the lock ring back down against the bell. The 710 is farely accurate and serviveable for hunting and some target work.If you have one use it with pride but I wouldnt advise going out and buying one unless you get a heck of a deal. But I picked two up in .270cal.that two young men bought thinking they were going to hunt varmints.Altho I havnt shot these and probably wont they could be used for moderate shooting. They are trading stock for me.My biggest complaint with the 710 is the hard working bolt. The ones I,ve shot would get under 1 1/2" at 100yds making them good medium size game rifles. samuel.

simmons glass is junk, but you can normally see thru them at 100yds. the 710 is a very poor choice for doing anything with. the barrel is pressed in, and no one makes aftermarket stocks for it. buy a 700, or a savage and you'll be way ahead in the long run.

Hi there,

Try Leupold || VX-7 2.5-10x45mm

Mount it on
Remington Model 700™ Sendero SF II

Saves going out forr a new barrel and stock.

find appropriate rings and mounts, and you are good to go.

If I were you, I would stay away from the 710, it is not a good rifle. Remington makes other products that you would be much better off with. And my experiance with Simmons is that they are very cheaply built. You would be a lot happier with a Nikon, Burris or Leupold.

One man`s "junk" is another man`s scope that does just fine.
Mine may be the exception but have had no problems what so ever with
mine.

Take heart...I have 5 World Class Tascos with the same reputation...never had a problem with them either. The oldest is a 1.75-5x that I initially bought for a .444 Marlin. It withstood 300+ rnds of 265gr Hornady over 46grs H4198 on the now long gone Marlin (the only rifle to ever scope me) and has been on several rifles since. Internally it remains sound...externally, excluding the lenses, it's beat to ****.
One question though...what did you mean "at 100 yds, I can barely make my target"?

Here's a link to confused enlightenment.

What i meant was that at 100yds, i can barely see the 10 ring much less the X ring. I'm using one of those large cal. paper targets from Wal-Mart. l would think that i'd be able to see better than that.

Can you see a magnification change as you rotate to power-adjustment ring? I've seen a couple of scopes (one Wal-Mart Bushnell and one "vintage" Leupold), that wouldn't adjust when turned. The Bushnell was going to cost more than it was worth to fix and the Loopy took several months and came back with a different reticle than it left with. My son's Savage 110 .270 came with a Bushnell Sharpshooter that shot out within 40 rds. but it was also discovered that the rings were too low and the power ring would hit the action leaving the scope stuck on 3x.

The Simmons scopes I have seen that came with the combos out of Wal-Mart didnt hold up too good.Usually the crosshares turned or broke. Most scopes I see made in China arent too good no matter what name is on them. samuel.
