I want to hunt for hogs

Ive never been hunting, but i want to hog hunt so bad!
Which of my guns would be better?

.50 cal muzzle loader, or a 7mm mauser?

When shooting, i prefer the 7mm, for the obvious reason, faster loading.

Is that an ok gun to shoot a hog with?

Anyone know a good place to hunt hogs in jacksonville florida?

The 7mm Mauser would make a fine hog gun, hogs arn't too hard to kill, if you place your shot correctly.

A 7x57 Mauser would be just fine. I don't know about Fl., but here in Tx., we're so overrun with hogs that farmers are begging people to come shoot them. FWIW, I've found that the best shot placement is just between the ft. of the shoulder and the rear of the jawline. Shooting behind the shoulder usually results in a gut-shot hog that will still cover a long distance if not stopped.

I know a place or two where there are hogs and deer, but they are throwing up neighborhoods everywhere and cutting the woods down.
So i need to find a good place.

Ive never been, and plan on going by myself, or possibly with my young nephew.

Is there any articles to read on how to hunt?
I know it sounds silly.
Do you walk around till you find them, or wait and hide?

Large Boar Hogs with tusks can be dangerous as can Large sows with Piglets. Be careful out there !!!
We used to look for Signs of where Hogs were rooting and then get in the thickets following their Trails and try and find wallows or where they were drinking water.
find a place to sit and watch from concealment and bust em when they come out, if you didn't run into em face to face in the thickets. That can get your adrenaline racing...pull back some brush and be face to face with a large hog... OMG ! I loved hunting Them.

I think this is a little off the wall.I have used the double lung, right behind any heavy shoulder bone shot and seldom had an animal run past 50yds.I never made a gut shot and seldom shot twice. In 44yrs of big game hunting(actually a little time off in the service)I have never had the behind the shoulder shot fail me completely.I have had bullet failure but still got what I shot.If they cant breath they arent going far.Arrows would seldom work if it wasnt for the behind the shoulder shot.Dont let anyone tell you it doesnt work.If someone is going to make a gut shot it doesnt make much difference where they are aiming. sam.

Well Sam, I normally agree with you, but I've lost way too many pigs to agree on this one. I was taught to shoot pigs right behind the shoulder just like a deer. The majority of pigs I shot this way ran off like they'd never been touched, depite trailing blood like a leaking water truck. A friend showed me where to shoot a pig, and I haven't lost one since. FWIW, most pigs shot in this spot(between the jaw and shoulder) end up with a shattered spine or at least an inoperable shoulder.

The 7x57 mauser should fine. Although, I disagree with the statement made earlier that pigs are easy to kill. On the contrary, they are in my opinion one of the toughest critters in the woods to kill. Sorry Toolman, I would tend to go with the behind the shoulder shot - the neck shot would be easy to mess up if you don't know exactly where to put it. Make sure to use modern hunting ammo in the mauser. You don't want to have to trail a pig you shot with junk ammo. They can get a little ticked off about being shot.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I didnt want to make a thread for this, because its probably a dumb question to most of you, but can you buy ammo online?
If so, whats a good, reputable ammo shop online?

I can only find 7x57's at one store and the price is outrageous!

You can buy ammo online to your heart's content (assuming you're oold enough to buy ammo) and there are hundreds of online retailers:
Welcome to Ammunition To Go! - good cheap prices and fast shipping
J&G Sales - cheap and they deal in more than just ammo
MidwayUSA - Shooting Supplies, Reloading, Gun Parts, Ammunition, Rifle Scopes & Airguns - just about anything you ever wanted/needed firearm related and cheap and good service

These are my 3 favorites but there are plenty of others
