boar pics

The guy who traps on my FIL's place bagged two more this weekend making somewhere around 50-60 for the year. Here's a few pics. BTW, the larger black and white boar is somewhere in the neighborhood of 225-250 lbs.

Not these, they are loaded into a specially-designed trailer and then sold to a slaughterhouse with the meat going to China and Japan-it's considered a delicacy to them. I have one trap and due to the design, I have to shoot them in it(It's not really my trap, a guy left it out here a few years ago). Trust me, if you let one of these out of the cage without being pretty far away, you'll get all the "sport" you want. It's hard to tell from the pics, but both of these guys have around 2-2 1\2" cutters and a whole bunch of mean in them. I prefer hunting them, but trapping is a much more effective way of getting rid of them. The damage they cause is unbelievable!

those things look spooky.
i would definitely want enough gun!

if those things were running around where i lived there would be no sport about it.
i would be exterminating them as quickly as possible!

poison, traps, guns i dont care.

The last one I shot was around 30ft with a 196 gr. s.p. from my 8x57 Mauser. I shot him a bit high behind the left shoulder and he went down on his left ft. leg and started going in circles so i shot him behind the left ear. That still didn't stop him completely, so I snuck up behind him and popped him in the back of the head with my PA-63. I've shot several that dropped like a rock, but the first shot counts for a lot. What makes it fun to me is the fact that we see them mostly at night which definitely adds to the challenge when you hunt by yourself.

You get on the ground near one of these and you may rethink your bacon and ham theory. These critters are dangerous.

At the University of Arkansas they have one of those critters as their team mascot. Those razorbacks could be more than most people bargain for if they aren't prepared properly.

We had pork chops and ribs from the last one I shot for dinner tonight. The pics don't do the bigger hog justice, he's between 22"-24" across the shoulders. The smaller one in the rear trap is about 30 lbs. lighter but is a lot more aggresive. For the guys who've never played with 'em, look at the top of the traps, they're bowed up from the hogs rearing up and trying to rip the tops out. The guy that owns these traps lost a large boar last year when he reared up and broke the welds on the wire, then climbed over the side while the guy was hitting him with a cattle prod to try to make him stop. He estimates that hog at just over 300 lbs.

Wild boar

When I went to visit my parents in Arkansas my little brother and I went to a local gun store. There was a man that walked in just ahead of us and he was on crutches. Apparently he was hunting and wounded a boar and it attacked him and mauled him pretty bad. His right leg was so torn up that it took several hundred stitches to put him back together. I will never forget the sight when he lifted his pants up and half his calf was missing.
I have always wanted to hunt them but I always see that guys leg and think of what could happen if I didn't take it down with the first shot.

Wow those are scary lookin' beasts aren't they. Bet they taste good though! BTW, toolman, my sis is stationed at Dyess AFB and lives in Abilene. I'll have to ask her if she's had any run-ins w/ one of these guys yet. So far the only nasty little critters she's encountered that I know of are the jerks who robbed her house earlier this month! They took all my brother-in-law's firearms!

Wow, I spent four years in Abilene, at Dyess AFB (94-98). We took a lot of hikes in the surrounding area. Sure glad we never ran into one of these boars, because we were unarmed each time. Thanks for the pics. I'd like to hunt one of those, if we had them where I live in Idaho.

Khahn... while I was stationed in England my home was burglarized. The thief's were taking stuff out the back door when I drove up. I reported the incident to the base, and in England the military had an insurance protection for military personnel stationed there and I got replacement value paid to me for items stolen. Maybe there is a similar program at Dyess AFB, which your sister could check on at the base legal office? It's really too bad that the thief's got firearms. Sorry to hear that. I really liked living in Abilene, had some good times. But, there is an active crime side of the community that you needed to watch out for.

Small world indeed! Insurance is working on restitution. Because these guys hit more than one home, there was more than 3 people involved and they took several firearms the ATF has been called in and they are being charged w/ organized crime. Thankfully, it appears that they are going to go away for a long time!
