H&R Ultra Hunter

Okay fellas I have been looking at a H&R .308 Ultra Hunter. Anyone have experience with this family of rifles? Please talk me out of it if you think it is a bad choice.

I have only owned one of the Handi Rifles, but it was a neat little rifle. It didn't fit with what I was wanting to use it for, but no real complaints - it was not a .308. I don't see how you could go wrong if you want a basic hunting rifle. I won't try to talk you out of it - you are on your own. Good Luck!

It's a single-shot so I wouldn't want one for hogs, bears, or Mtn. Lions, but they're great for everything else. For the price, how can you go wrong?

I have owned many many H&R/NEF rifles, I really like them, they are accurate, and great hunting rifles.

Thanks for the input guys. I live in Kentucky where we don't have dangerous game plus I hunted with bow and muzzle loader before I ever hunted with breech loading guns, so a follow up shot is not a concern. You guys have been a great help.

By the way BaconMaster what kind of groups do you get out of the .223 model? I thought about getting that one for varmints later if I liked the first.

Hullo, 502adamh! I have a bit of experience with these guns. I encourage you to go for it. H&R has a lot of bang for the buck, and they are very accurate. My only problem with a break-action rifle is that they can be kind of annoying to shoot from the bench since you have to lift it from the rest to reload. But the bench usually doesn't get in the way when you're footing it through the backwoods . Get it in .308 and it'll be a tackdriver (or a deerslayer). A friend of my dad's uses his H&R .223 to shoot coyotes from I think 400 yards. Just make sure and bring it into work to let me shoot when you get it.

Hey 502adamh, don't look at it as being paid then spending it, look at it like you're earning free guns.

Dear SoDakHunter,
ouch.
