Arkansashunter - for sure, your never know when your going to run into them and you never know what direction they are going to run, lol

toolman - interesting thought on the shot placement. I used to shoot for the chest vital area, avoiding the shoulder. Then one day we had trapped a few hogs and had put them in a calf trailer to haul them away, (killing pigs around your trap is a good way to not get anymore), and kill them. I shot the first one like 4 times dead center skull from the front at about 4-5 feet away. He didnt go down so I circled around to the pen we had transferred them to and shot him right behind of the skull, right behind the ear and he dropped. I shot the rest in the same spot and they all dropped with one shot. So now I shot right behind the base of the ear. So far all that I have shot there have dropped immediately.

jamesw - careful about taking dogs out on hog hunting trips, its a good way to get them killed, especially ones not used to dealing with hogs. I personally dont hunt with dogs (for hogs that is) because its just too much of a hassle. Most people around here that do hunt with dogs have 5 or more black mouth curs to run them and 3 or 4 pits they let loose once the hogs stop running to take them down. Its a bloody and brutal business and they all lose a few dogs every year. Not my cup of tea.

Funny little side note on the dogs, I have a friend that had a toy poodle that was plumb hog crazy, and he was actually useful in hunting hogs. He could follow hog scent better than the curs and would often lead them onto the right trail and when he barked (signaling a hot trail) they would immediately circle to him and start down the trail. Of course they would leave him far behind on the chase and the little poodle would often wind up catching a ride the rest the way. Once there though he would jump into the fray and many times he would run under a cornered hog, unsettling the boar and causing him to open up a weak spot to one of the pits who would take the boar down. He was an all around useful hog dog despite his pint size. Unfortunately he jumped into a pen full of boars at the house and couldnt get back out.

I used to hunt with dogs, bull arab, great dane cross. And a kelpie (sheep dog) american staffy cross.

When the dogs bit (lugged) onto the pigs ears I'd grab a back leg and roll them over and stick them either under the front leg or down through the throat

I always used chest and throat collars made from harness leather for protection.

Oh and I carried a .44 lever action, just in case.

I have since moved into town and could not keep the bull arab, he weighs around 50 Kilos and needed constant excercise.

Big Faulky makes a very good point...the only time I've been put up a tree by a hog was by a big old sow wit a litter of piglets....I was squirrel with a single barrel Iver Johnson 16 ga and just accidentally got too close to her and her family...me and my partner had to wait for 10-15 minutes before we could come down, get our guns and get the h--- out of there..

jamesw Please don't take your dogs with you !!! If they strikre a trail of a Deer you may never see them again. Please trust me on this one.
And if they get after a hog you may have one of your pets get killed.
It's not wise to take City dogs (I'll say) to the woods because of all the differnet smells there going to smell.
They will smell something and off they'll go and know amount of yelling will stop them.

Welcome to the great outdoors and I'm delighted you've gone hunt'in and got to see wildlife.
Leave them dogs at home PLEASE ...A.H

Hey ArkansasHunter, I've got a camp in a heavily wooded area in a rural co. in SE Al. The other day I was cutting underbrush when my Husky, Lab and Chow mixed breed came running out of the woods. He had his tail tucked, he was looking over his shoulder and he ran right by me as if I was'nt there. He ran right to the cabin and hid under it...don't know what was after him but did kill a big male coyote there a few days later...don't know if it was a coy. or a hog chasing him but he was scared.

I found someone to hunt with.
I havent met him yet, but i found him on craigslist, he had a wanted ad for a hunting dog.
He goes every weekend. I went today and got my hunting lisence, and we're going this weekend.
He hunts with catch dogs, so it should be a blast.

Are there any laws about hunting with a pistol?
I want to shoot a hog with my new .45
