How can you narrow it down to just one?!!!!! I like the 25-06 .308, 30-06, .35 remington, 45-70 and .41 magnum.

348 Winchester

I have used 30-30, 32 Special, 270, 308, 30-06 and a 348 and nothing compares to lugging that old lever action Model 71 348 through the big woods. Has it all, nostalgia, stopping power and the admiration of everyone you run into in the woods!

What do they use in Iowa if not centerfire? Is it shotgun only? What about muzzle loaders? I can't imagine sanctioned deer hunting with rimfire.

I prefer the 300 Win Mag and if you handload you can get the same velocities as the 3006 or the 308 which are also excellent deer cartriges, plus practice with the lesser recoil as I get older appeals to my "flinch" factor.

You can use Shotguns (With slugs), Muzzleloaders, and I believe anyone over 21 can use a handgun during the shotgun seasons but, the DNR is picky about caliber and you have to have a 4-inch barrel at least.

I like them all!from the.223 up to the.50BMG.My favorite is the .270WSM(hence the user name).I have found this one is capable of taking whitetail from 0-400 yds. There has been some discussion on the WSM's,but I absolutely love mine!

The 50 BMG, eh? thats one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. I don't believe in "overkill" but a 50 BMG on a whitetail is just plain silly.

Midas,
I hope I haven't done anything to offend thee,I didn't mean that as a whitetail caliber.I meant I liked all rifles.

Nope, no probs, sir. We have had a rash of posts lately that advocate using some "unusual" methods of harvesting whitetail deer.

i use the good old 30-30 win, its one of the best in my opinion. i used it when i lived in Pennsylvania to shoot whitetails, and now in Colorado to shoot mule deer and elk. as a matter of a fact i put my first of all three down with the same gun.

My favorite used to be 30.06, now its my 270. next year it'll be the new gun i choose and a few years later it will change again, I pray! so i'll have an excuse to buy another. But my alltime fav is my TC contender in 7mm. I absolutely love that set up and I feel cool with a 18" gun all shiny with a big shiny polished alluminum scope strapped across my chest. And my kids think Im GI Joe when we go. (they r 5 and 3, both boys!)

Pistol if anyone didnt get that above

I have used quite a few different calibers any thing .30 caliber or larger seems to work best for me, If hunting up close I love my '94 marlin.44 mag and have killed more Deer ang Hog with it than anything else, within 100 yds it is an awsome killer

all the deer i have ever shot with the exception of 2 were killed with the 270 win., they were DRT (dead right there) the other 2 were taken with the 25-06 and 308 both were DRT.

My current deer caliber is the 100+ year-old 7.62x54R because I have this "thing" about hunting with military rifles. It is very versatile if you handload and I've never had a deer go more than 20ft. after being hit with a 150 gr. Hornady Interlock. I shot a huge doe last year with a 203 gr. Barnaul soft-point and she dropped like a rock as well with a neck shot.

I am using a 270 WSM next year because of the research I have found on it. But have always used a 25/06. The 25/06 will always be there for a backup.

how has THE BOB been neglected???? I shoot one every year with the 257 roberts, a first production year remington 722 what's that 1948, and then i put it back up. It shoots honest to god .35-.5 moa with federal premium 120 grn nosler partitions, so i don't handload for it any more. Anyway i shoot it like 5 times a year, cuz I want it to last forever without losing accuracy and I have no idea how maany rounds are thru it. I'm basically totally neurotic about it. I need another one for daily use, but it wouldn't shoot as good, and I've always felt the Bob was perfect, so i'd feel strange if one fell short of that expectation... guess I should pony up for a custom barreled one...
