| New Rifle Options (Help Please)
Hi. I am new to the forum and was wondering if I could get your opinions on this question. I am going to buy my first rifle this offseason for which I will be hunting primarily in Florida, Kentucky, or Georgia. I am either going to purchase a Rossi single shot .308 or a Mossberg 100ATR in .270. What do you think would be the better choice for where and what I will be hunting?

| Depends on what you plan to be hunting next 10 years, shooting range i.e. 100 or 300 yards, open or brushy. look at other posts regarding the 308 and 270 get the drift of what current opinion is. Have an open mind consider the future needs and wants 30-06 or WSM. All of them will do a good job if you do it first. Good Luck |

| I really have enjoyed my Rossi
While the decision is up to you, naturally, I will tell you I have been surprised and pleased with the quality and accuracy of my Rossi. Based on my experience I do not hesitate to recommend Rossi rifles and shotguns to others.

308 and 06 a very verstile ammo, these 2 cartidges are very common here in the usa lower 48 anyway, wide choice in bullet weight.

As far as cartridges go, I would pick the 270 over the 308. I think the 308 has an undersized case for the bore. The 270 is a better balanced cartridge and can be loaded up for elk and moose, and down for deer and coyotes. Not sure what you plan to hunt but I had a single shot once and really disliked that one shot gone, and now what am I going to do feeling. To me the natural choice in centerfire rifles is the bolt action. It is strong, and the manufacturer has no excuse for not making a good gun. The Mossberg looks nice. I would look for a 24" barrel to get that extra bit of free velocity out of the cartridge.Assuming the gun is going to be scoped, and only the die hards don't scope a centerfire, I look for a clean barrel without open sights. I have a Remington 700 that I like. Don't know anything about the Mossberg, except that they usually make decent quality guns at lower prices. Savage have that name as well. They make a nice trigger called AcuTrigger. It is user adjustable and features a two stage release that lets you be safe and still have a light trigger pull. Hope that helps some, Ron |

308 is a far better choice as you have so many choices for ammo verse the limited 270

| Our Wal-mart and Canadian Tire department stores carry more .270 than .308 by far, in Canada, the .308 does have more weight options when you go to the gun shops though. It would be a tough choice if I could only have one.

If you havent looked at it yet the ATR also comes in .30-06. That would give you the .30 cal wound channel and bullet options with a velocity between the .308 and .270. Me personally I like the .308, but if your choice is between a single .308 and a bolt .270 go with the .270.

Just curious, what is the hype about Savage rifles these days. Down here in Texas they are not very sought after...not sure why, but If it's not a Remington,Browning,Weatherby or Ruger then it stays on the gun rack at the gun shop. I did look at a 243 Savage the other day that had been sitting in the same place on the gun rack for over 3mos...the rifle looked nice...just a tad heavy is all. I would consider buying one since it is in my price range and the wood stock looked first rate.

Both are good options! You said you would be hunting in FL,Ga,Ky so I assume you are going after deer. Both are fine choices, and you wouldn't go wrong with either.I think your biggest decision is to go for the single shot or the bolt action.I prefer the bolt action.Savage,Mossberg,Winchester, and now Weatherby make fine rifles for the budget minded consumer.(check you local Wal-Mart)
